Chapter 7 - The Hidden Ledger of Evelyn Vance-7
With Julian behind bars awaiting trial, I returned to the grand Victorian estate.
The house was empty now. The silence was no longer heavy or frightening; it felt peaceful, as though the walls were finally resting after decades of harboring dark family secrets.
I went down to Evelyn’s sewing room in the sub-basement. I wanted to carefully review the remaining contents of the iron safe to ensure no other legal surprises were waiting to destroy the company's future.
As I sifted through old family photographs and letters, I noticed something odd about the back panel of the iron safe. There was a small, secondary keyhole hidden beneath a sliding metal plate—one that required a second key.
I paused. Where was the second key?
I remembered the day Evelyn passed away. After she gave me the silver key, she had pointed feebly toward her bedside cabinet. At the time, I had assumed she was pointing at her water glass or her oxygen machine.
I immediately drove to Chicago Memorial Hospital, requested access to Evelyn’s personal belongings that had been placed in secure storage after her death, and picked up her small leather handbag.
I searched through the lining of the bag. Hidden inside a small pocket was a tiny brass key tied to a piece of faded red ribbon.
My heart pounded as I took the brass key back to the estate.
I inserted the brass key into the secondary lock. With a heavy, metallic click, the back panel of the safe popped open, revealing a hidden compartment that held a dusty black binder labeled: THE TRUE HISTORY OF VANCE GLOBAL.
I sat down at Evelyn’s old sewing table and opened the binder.
As I turned the pages, the dark, horrifying truth of the Vance family was finally revealed in full.
