Chapter 2 - The Tropical Mirage-2

Five thousand miles away, in the air-conditioned luxury of the Grand Wailea Resort in Maui, Julian Vance reclined on a poolside cabana, sipping a crystal glass of aged scotch. Beside him lay Chloe, a twenty-four-year-old former lounge hostess whose affection for Julian was directly proportional to the balance on his corporate credit card.
"Julian, darling," Chloe purred, adjusting her designer sunglasses. "Are you sure we can't extend the trip by another week? You promised we'd take the yacht to Lanai."
Julian laughed softly, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. "Whatever you want, babe. I run a fifty-million-dollar empire. A few extra days in paradise won't hurt anyone."
His phone chimed on the teak table. He glanced down, annoyed when he saw a series of missed call notifications from his sister, Audrey, and several urgent emails from his senior executives.
He dismissed them with a swipe of his thumb. He was tired of Clarissa’s frantic calling earlier that day. He had convinced himself that his wife was simply naggy, dramatic, and desperate for attention. He genuinely believed his mother was merely resting comfortably at home under hospice care, oblivious to the fact that her heart had ceased beating hours ago.
"Is that your wife again?" Chloe asked, pouting slightly. "She’s so needy. Can't she handle her own life for five minutes without bothering you?"
"Ignore her," Julian said coldly, taking a cigar from a leather case. "Clarissa knows her place. She takes care of the house, she takes care of my mother, and she keeps her mouth shut. That’s what I pay her for."
Suddenly, his phone vibrated again. This time, it wasn't a call from Clarissa. It was an automated priority notification from his primary wealth management firm in Chicago.
Julian frowned, tapping the screen.
ALERT: Account #8802 (Vance Family Operating Trust) has been placed under temporary administrative hold per court injunction #4092. All outgoing transfers and secondary credit lines have been FROZEN.
Julian sat up abruptly, his scotch nearly spilling onto his linen trousers. "What the hell?"
"What's wrong, babe?" Chloe asked, looking up from her phone.
"It's just a system error," Julian muttered, though a sudden knot of tension tightened in his chest. He dialed his CFO, Marcus Vance, who answered on the very first ring.
"Julian! Where the hell are you?!" Marcus shouted through the receiver, his voice trembling with genuine panic. "All hell is breaking loose here!"
"Marcus, calm down. Why are the operating accounts frozen? Fix it immediately."
"I can't fix it, Julian! The board just received a certified court order signed by the Probate Master! Clarissa presented the original, un-redacted 2018 Estate Deed alongside a toxicological forensic report! The bank frozen everything under the Emergency Asset Protection Act!"
Julian’s face turned gray. The tropical warmth around him suddenly felt like an icy sauna. "What... what toxicological report? What are you talking about?"
"She knows about the thallium, Julian!" Marcus whispered frantically. "She knows you were altering Evelyn’s prescriptions! And that’s not all... Evelyn died yesterday afternoon! Clarissa had her cremated and held the service without telling anyone!"
The cigar slipped from Julian’s fingers and fell into the sand.
"Evelyn... died?" Julian stammered, his mind reeling in horror. "Yesterday?"
"Yes! And Audrey is screaming mad! She’s threatening to go to the press because your name is plastered all over the legal filings as a suspect in a homicide investigation!"
Julian stared blindly at the sparkling ocean water in front of him. His phone buzzed again with a text notification from an unknown, untraceable number.
He opened the text with shaking thumbs. It contained a single high-resolution photograph: his wedding ring sitting on his mahogany desk beside the signed divorce papers and the toxicological report.

Underneath the image was a short message from Clarissa:
You ignored thirty calls while my mother-in-law died. Now, try calling your lawyers. Let's see if they answer.
