Chapter 5 - The Paper Empire Collapses-5

Over the next seventy-two hours, Julian’s life disintegrated with terrifying speed.

Deprived of access to the Vance trust accounts, his credit cards were systematically declined across the city. The penthouse apartment he had leased in downtown Chicago for his mistress was locked by the landlord due to unpaid security deposits. Chloe, realizing that her multi-millionaire benefactor was now a bankrupt criminal suspect, packed her designer bags and vanished overnight, taking whatever jewelry Julian had bought her and leaving him completely alone.

Julian tried to check into a hotel, but his personal checking account had been frozen under the court injunction. He was forced to sleep in his car in a public parking garage near the river, shivering in the cold damp autumn air.

Meanwhile, I worked tirelessly at the company headquarters.

With the help of Arthur and an independent forensic auditing team, we uncovered the full extent of Julian and Marcus’s financial rot. They hadn't just embezzled from the pension fund; they had taken out massive, high-interest loans from offshore lenders tied to organized financial syndicates, using the company's real estate as collateral.

If I hadn't stepped in when I did, Vance Global would have been declared bankrupt within six months, leaving hundreds of honest employees without jobs or retirement savings.

On Thursday morning, I called a company-wide assembly in the main auditorium.

Over four hundred employees gathered, their faces anxious and uncertain after days of sensational media headlines regarding the family scandal.

I stood on the stage alone, wearing a simple gray suit.

"I know you are all afraid," I began, my voice carrying clearly through the speakers. "You have read the news. You have heard about the betrayal, the fraud, and the criminal investigations surrounding Julian Vance."

I took a deep breath, looking out at the hardworking men and women who formed the true backbone of the company.

"I am not here to give you corporate excuses," I continued. "I am here to tell you that the rot has been cut out. As the majority shareholder, I have personally injected twenty million dollars from Evelyn’s private reserves back into the employee pension fund. Your jobs are safe. Your healthcare is secure. And from this day forward, Vance Global will be run with integrity, transparency, and respect."

The auditorium erupted into thunderous applause. Employees stood up, cheering and shouting their support. For twenty years, I had been an invisible shadow behind a corrupt tyrant; now, I was standing in the light as their protector.

As I walked off the stage, my assistant handed me a phone.

"Mrs. Vance," she whispered nervously. "It's the Cook County Sheriff's Department. They have Julian in custody. He was caught trying to break into the main mansion to access the sub-basement safe."

I looked at the window overlooking the city, feeling no sadness, no regret, and no pity.

"Tell the sheriff I'll be right there," I said softly. "It's time to close this chapter."
