Chapter 12 - The Unclaimed Belongings-12

A week after the trial concluded, I received a notice from the police impound lot.

Among Julian’s personal effects seized from his car at the time of his arrest was a small leather suitcase that belonged to his mother, Evelyn, which he had snatched from the house during his desperate break-in attempt before his capture.

I drove down to the station, signed the release forms, and took the suitcase back to my private apartment overlooking Lake Michigan.

I set the suitcase on the dining table and opened it.

Inside were several old photo albums filled with pictures of Evelyn as a young woman, her handwritten recipe books, and a delicate silver music box that played a soft, beautiful lullaby when wound.

At the very bottom of the suitcase lay a small, sealed envelope addressed to me in Evelyn’s handwriting, bearing a date from three years ago: To Clarissa, on the day you finally break free.

My heart swelled with emotion as I broke the wax seal and opened the letter.

My dearest Clarissa,

If you are reading this, it means the storm has passed, and you are finally standing in the light you so richly deserve.

I knew from the moment you entered our home that you possessed a quiet strength far greater than my son’s arrogant bluster. I saw how you cared for me, not out of duty or expectation of wealth, but out of the sheer kindness of your soul.

I tried for years to guide Julian toward the light, but some hearts are born hollow, obsessed only with gold and power. When I realized he was beyond saving, my only goal became ensuring that his wickedness would not destroy you.

Do not feel guilty for the fall of the Vance family, my sweet girl. You did not destroy them; their own greed was the fire that consumed them. You were simply the hand that held the mirror to their truth.

Take the empire. Rebuild it in your grandfather’s honor. Live a life filled with joy, travel, art, and true love. You owe nothing to the past.

I am resting peacefully now, knowing that my key found its rightful home.

With all my love eternal,

Evelyn

I held the letter against my chest, tears flowing freely down my cheeks—not tears of sorrow, but tears of profound gratitude and closure.

Evelyn hadn't just saved me from a toxic marriage; she had given me a mother's true love, a love that transcended death itself.
