Chapter 3 - The Gathering of the Vultures-3

By eight o'clock the following evening, I was sitting in the high-floor conference room of Sterling, Vance & Associates in downtown Chicago. The glass walls offered a breathtaking view of the city skyline, but inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension, fear, and silent panic.
Seated around the long mahogany table were the powerful members of the Vance family: Julian’s ambitious sister Audrey, his uncle Marcus, three senior board directors, and two top criminal defense attorneys.
They had spent the last two decades treating me like an unpaid housekeeper, a quiet, invisible woman who simply existed to serve their matriarch and keep Julian’s domestic life orderly while they enjoyed the dividends of Vance Global.
When I walked into the room wearing a tailored black suit, holding a leather briefcase, accompanied by two of the most fearsome probate litigators in the state, the room went completely silent.
Audrey slammed her hands on the table, her diamond bracelets clinking loudly. "Clarissa! How dare you! You kept us from our mother’s deathbed! You had her body burned without our consent! You are a monster!"
I pulled out a chair at the head of the table—the seat reserved exclusively for the primary shareholder—and sat down calmly. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't display a single shred of emotion.
"Audrey," I said, my voice steady as steel. "Your mother died holding my hand while your brother was buying crystal champagne for a twenty-four-year-old escort in Maui. If you want to talk about monsters, I suggest you look at the man sitting on a plane back to Chicago right now."
"You have no authority here!" Uncle Marcus snapped, his face flushed red. "Julian is the CEO of Vance Global! You are just his estranged wife!"
My attorney, Arthur Pendelton, stepped forward and opened a thick leather binder, sliding several certified court documents across the polished table.
"As of six o'clock this evening," Arthur announced in a booming, authoritative voice, "the Cook County Probate Court has recognized the 2021 Codicil signed by the late Evelyn Vance. Under Section 4 of the trust, complete controlling voting rights of Vance Global—totaling sixty-two percent of all outstanding shares—have been transferred immediately to Mrs. Clarissa Vance."
Audrey stared at the papers, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief. "This... this is fake! My mother would never give her empire to an outsider!"
"I was not an outsider to her, Audrey," I said softly, looking her dead in the eye. "I was the only person who cared whether she took her medicine, the only person who bathed her, and the only person who protected her while her own children treated her like an inconvenient bill."
I pulled out a secondary file and laid it open.
"Furthermore," I continued, "this file contains full financial records detailing how Julian, with the active help of Marcus, embezzled twelve million dollars from the company's pension fund over the last eighteen months to cover offshore gambling debts."
Marcus’s jaw dropped. His face drained of all color, and he sank back into his chair as if he had been physically struck.
"I am offering the board a single choice tonight," I declared, leaning forward and resting my hands on the table. "You will immediately vote to terminate Julian Vance from all corporate positions for cause. You will cooperate fully with the State Attorney's investigation into his financial crimes. Do this, and the company survives. Refuse... and I will liquidate the assets by Friday and leave every single one of you with nothing."
The directors looked at each other in sheer terror. They knew I wasn't bluffing. Evelyn had built this company, but she had given me the keys to burn it to the ground if necessary.
Before anyone could speak, the heavy double doors of the conference room burst open.

Julian stood in the doorway. His suit was crumpled, his hair disheveled, and his face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage.
"CLARISSA!" he roared, striding into the room. "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!"
