Chapter 7 - THE SOLITARY MEAL

-7

By late afternoon, the rain had cleared, leaving the wet streets of Washington, D.C., glistening under the pale amber light of the setting sun.

Inside the private penthouse suite of the Escalante Tower, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the luxurious chaos of the Vance mansion. There were no crystal chandeliers, no imported Italian marble floors, and no sycophantic guests praising a false king. The penthouse was a masterpiece of minimalist modern architecture—clean lines of dark walnut wood, floor-to-ceiling glass, and warm, understated lighting that emphasized power through restraint rather than ostentatious display.

Mariana sat alone at a small, elegant dining table overlooking the glittering panorama of the city below. Before her sat a simple, perfectly prepared meal—a reminder of the quiet, ordinary life she had once thought she wanted, before she was forced to unleash the full, terrifying might of her family's empire.

Hector Escalante walked quietly into the dining area, holding a crystal glass of aged Scotch. He stopped beside her chair, looking down at his daughter with a mixture of profound pride and lingering concern.

"The federal marshals have completed the seizure of the Vance estate," Hector said softly, taking a seat opposite her. "Andrew has been legally evicted. He’s currently staying in a cheap motel down by the industrial district, entirely cut off from his credit cards, his car fleet, and his social circle."

Mariana picked up her fork, her movements deliberate and unhurried. "Did he try to contact me?"

"Dozens of times," Hector replied, taking a sip of his Scotch. "His phone calls were automatically routed to Marcus’s office, where they were recorded for legal evidence. He spent the entire afternoon screaming, crying, and demanding an explanation, entirely unable to comprehend how a woman he considered a penniless nobody could own the ground beneath his feet."

Mariana stared down at her plate in silence for a long moment. A faint shadow of sorrow flickered across her eyes—not for Andrew, but for the illusion she had spent four years desperately trying to believe in.

"I wanted it to be real, Father," Mariana whispered, her voice barely audible above the hum of the penthouse climate control. "I wanted a marriage built on mutual respect, not corporate portfolios. I wanted someone who loved me when I wore a plain cotton shirt just as much as when I wore a diamond necklace."

Hector reached across the table, placing his weathered, warm hand over hers. "You gave him four years of your life, Mariana. You gave him your patience, your protection, and your wealth. A man who measures his worth by the humility of his partner is a man cursed with a hollow soul. You didn't fail him; he failed the privilege of knowing you."

Mariana looked up, meeting her father’s steady, reassuring gaze. The lingering pain in her chest finally began to dissipate, replaced by a profound sense of liberation.

"You're right," Mariana said, a quiet, resolute strength returning to her voice. "I spent four years playing the role of an ordinary housewife to accommodate his fragile ego. But that chapter is closed."

"What are your instructions for tomorrow?" Hector asked. "The board of directors for Escalante Global is convening at ten in the morning. Vance Industries is currently sitting in receivership, its stock trading at absolute zero. Do we liquidate the remnants, or do we absorb what's left?"

Mariana picked up her cloth napkin, placed it neatly beside her plate, and stood up, walking toward the grand floor-to-ceiling window to look out at the sprawling metropolis below.

"We don't liquidate, Father," Mariana said, her voice carrying the absolute authority of a true empress. "We buy it. Every patent, every asset, every subsidiary. I want Vance Industries rebranded and absorbed entirely under the Escalante umbrella as a subsidiary logistics division."

She turned around, her eyes flashing with cold, brilliant determination.

"And tomorrow morning... I want Andrew Vance brought to my office. It's time for him to experience what it truly means to kneel."
