Chapter 3 - THE EVICTION NOTICE

-3

The sharp, rhythmic pounding at the front entrance of the mansion reverberated through the grand foyer, cutting through the heavy, suffocating silence of the breakfast parlor.

Andrew stood frozen by the dining table, the iPad still clutched in his white-knuckled grip, while Margaret gripped the edges of her chair, her knuckles turning pale. Brenda pressed her hands against her cheeks, her carefully cultivated composure completely shattering as panic set in.

"Thomas," Andrew ordered, his voice cracking slightly as he forced himself to regain a shred of authority. "Go to the front door and find out what kind of lunatic is banging on my estate."

Thomas didn't move immediately. He swallowed hard, looking toward the hallway as the sound of heavy boots echoed across the marble floor of the foyer.

"Mr. Vance... you don't need to send me," Thomas whispered, stepping back. "They're already inside."

The double doors of the breakfast parlor swung open.

Standing in the doorway was Marcus Sterling, impeccably dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, flanked by two towering private security guards wearing dark suits and earpieces. Behind them stood three municipal sheriff’s deputies, their hands resting casually on their utility belts.

Andrew’s anger flared instantly, overriding his growing dread. He stepped forward, pointing a shaking finger at Marcus.

"Who the hell do you think you are?!" Andrew bellowed, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Breaking into private property? Do you know who I am? I am Andrew Vance, CEO of Vance Industries! Get out of my house before I have you all arrested for trespassing!"

Marcus didn't flinch. He adjusted his gold-rimmed spectacles, pulled a thick sheaf of legal documents from his leather portfolio, and looked at Andrew with the cold, detached professionalism of a surgeon preparing to excise a tumor.

"Mr. Andrew Vance," Marcus said, his voice calm, clear, and utterly devoid of fear. "You are currently standing inside a property owned entirely by Escalante Global Real Estate. As of 9:05 AM this morning, all residential leases, occupancy rights, and corporate guarantees associated with this estate have been officially revoked under breach of master asset covenants."

Margaret stood up from her chair, her face contorted with outrage, her voice trembling with aristocratic fury. "How dare you! This home has belonged to the Vance family for two generations! My son is a captain of industry, not a tenant! Who gave you the right to walk in here with your cheap legal threats?"

Marcus turned his gaze slowly toward Margaret, a faint, cold smile touching his lips. "Madam, your son never owned this house. When Vance Industries faced total bankruptcy four years ago—right before your precious son married a woman he considered 'too ordinary'—this entire estate was purchased at auction by the Escalante Family Trust to bail him out of debtor's prison. You have been living here courtesy of Mariana Escalante’s personal charity."

The room went dead silent.

Brenda gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Mariana? The... the quiet girl? That's impossible! She didn't even have a car when Andrew married her!"

"She didn't need a car," Marcus replied smoothly, stepping further into the room. "She owns the automotive manufacturing plants that built the fleet parked in your garage."

Andrew felt the floor drop out from under him. His knees buckled slightly, and he caught the edge of the dining table to keep from collapsing. The memory of the previous night flashed before his eyes—striking her across the face, calling her worthless, throwing her brown leather purse on the floor, and ordering her to kneel.

“Remember everything you said tonight, Andrew,” her voice echoed in his mind, calm and terrifyingly certain. “The fortune you think belongs to you... they all exist because of me.”

"No," Andrew whispered, shaking his head in denial, his voice barely a rasp. "No, this is a conspiracy. You're lying. You're working with her to fabricate documents!"

Marcus pulled a single, pristine sheet of paper from the portfolio and held it up. "This is the original marriage certificate and prenuptial asset declaration, signed by Andrew Vance on October 12th, four years ago. Clause 9 explicitly states that all corporate assets, real estate holdings, and personal accounts acquired during the marriage are held in trust under Mariana Escalante’s sole beneficial ownership, subject to immediate forfeiture in the event of gross misconduct, physical abuse, or corporate malfeasance."

Marcus let the paper drop onto the breakfast table, right next to Andrew’s untouched coffee.

"Furthermore," Marcus continued, his voice dropping an octave, "pursuant to the emergency injunction filed at the federal courthouse thirty minutes ago, all corporate cards, personal credit accounts, and liquid funds belonging to Andrew Vance have been frozen effective immediately."

One of the municipal sheriff’s deputies stepped forward, holding out a pair of standard-issue eviction notices and asset seizure warrants.

"Mr. Vance, you and your household have exactly one hour to pack your personal belongings and vacate the premises," the deputy announced firmly. "Any attempt to remove fixtures, artwork, or registered corporate property from this estate will be treated as grand larceny."

Margaret clutched her chest, letting out a sharp gasp before collapsing back into her dining chair, her eyes rolling back slightly in shock. "My... my heart... Brenda, get my salts..."

Brenda didn't move to help her. She stood frozen against the sideboard, her face drained of all color, staring at Andrew with a look of sudden, intense disgust.

"You told me you were a billionaire," Brenda hissed, her voice shaking with sudden fury. "You told me you ran this empire! You told me she was just a penniless nobody!"

"Brenda, wait—" Andrew reached out, but she violently slapped his hand away.

"Don't touch me, you pathetic fraud!" Brenda screamed, grabbing her designer handbag from the chair. "I am not staying another second in a house owned by the woman you humiliated! We are done!"

Without looking back, Brenda turned and bolted out of the breakfast parlor, pushing past the security guards and fleeing down the marble hallway, abandoning Andrew to the wreckage of the empire he never actually owned.
