Chapter 5 - THE FALL OF THE BROTHER

-5

The federal holding facility in downtown Washington, D.C., smelled of bleached floors, cold iron, and institutional despair. In the secure holding suite usually reserved for high-ranking white-collar criminals, Arthur Vance paced back and forth across the linoleum floor like a caged wolf.

His immaculate federal prosecutor’s suit was wrinkled, his tie loosened, and his silver hair disheveled. Just twenty-four hours earlier, he had been an untouchable pillar of the Department of Justice, a man who weaponized the law to protect his syndicate and crush his enemies.

Now, he was inmate 884-019, awaiting arraignment on charges of high treason, financial corruption, and accessory to murder.

The heavy steel door swung open, and two federal marshals escorted a visitor into the room.

It wasn't a defense attorney. It wasn't a sympathetic colleague.

It was Marcus Sterling, carrying a slim leather folder, accompanied by an armed federal guard who stood rigidly by the door.

Arthur stopped pacing, his eyes narrowing with furious indignation as he recognized the senior managing partner of Escalante Global Legal Counsel.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Arthur shouted, lunging toward the table. "You have no jurisdiction to enter a federal holding facility without a court-appointed magistrate present! This is an illegal intimidation tactic!"

Marcus calmly pulled out a chair, seated himself, and placed the leather folder on the stainless-steel table. He looked up at Arthur with an expression of icy amusement.

"Sit down, Arthur," Marcus said quietly, his voice carrying the weight of absolute authority. "You are no longer a federal prosecutor. You are a defendant facing multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole. Tone down the courtroom theatrics; they won't save you here."

Arthur clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white, but he slowly pulled out the opposite chair and sat down, his chest heaving with suppressed rage. "This is a setup. My brother’s wife... that insignificant nobody... she doesn't have the power to dismantle my career. I have connections in the Senate, in the intelligence community—"

"You had connections," Marcus interrupted smoothly, opening the folder to reveal a stack of encrypted bank statements and federal wire-transfer receipts. "Until Miss Escalante’s forensic accounting team decrypted your private terminal yesterday afternoon. Let’s review your achievements, shall we?"

Marcus pointed a finger at the top document.

"Five years ago, Elena Vance—a senior financial compliance auditor—discovered that your department was systematically siphoning defense subsidies into offshore shell corporations to fund illegal corporate acquisitions," Marcus recited, his tone chillingly clinical. "When she threatened to expose the syndicate, you didn't just fire her. You engineered her assassination. You had her car’s brake lines severed before she drove across the Georgetown bridge on a stormy night."

Arthur’s face turned the color of ash. He swallowed hard, his mouth opening slightly, but no words came out.

"And who helped you cover it up?" Marcus continued, leaning forward. "You recruited Karen Moreau—a former intelligence operative trained in psychological infiltration—and planted her into Benjamin’s life under the guise of an ordinary socialite, tasked with marrying him, isolating his family, and eventually securing Vance Holdings for your syndicate once Andrew’s company collapsed."

"How... how do you know all of that?" Arthur whispered, the veneer of his arrogance completely shattering. "Those files were stored on a military-grade encrypted server with zero external access!"

"Because the server was built, funded, and maintained by the Escalante Foundation," Marcus replied, a cold smile touching his lips. "You thought you were playing chess against a wealthy family of industrialists, Arthur. In reality, you were trespassing on property owned by the most powerful private conglomerate in the western hemisphere."

Arthur slumped back in his chair, all the fight draining out of him. He stared at the stainless-steel table, his hands trembling. "Mariana... she’s not just a wealthy housewife, is she?"

"Mariana Escalante is the sole heiress and executive director of Escalante Global," Marcus said, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "She spent four years living a quiet life with your brother, hoping against hope that beneath his arrogance and cruelty, he was a decent man who loved her for who she was."

Marcus leaned down, speaking softly into Arthur’s ear.

"You and your family tested her patience. You broke her trust. And in return, she didn't just destroy your wealth—she dismantled your entire existence."

As Marcus turned and walked toward the heavy steel door, Arthur buried his face in his hands, finally realizing the horrifying magnitude of the war they had started against a queen they thought was a peasant.
