Chapter 10 - THE SIGNATURE OF RUIN

-10

The silence in the grand executive office was so absolute that the hum of the climate control system sounded like rushing water.

Andrew knelt on the plush Persian rug, his forehead nearly touching the floor, his shoulders shaking with ragged, broken sobs. The man who had walked into his mansion just twenty-four hours earlier with supreme arrogance, surrounded by wealth, power, and sycophants, was now nothing more than a broken shell stripped of every illusion he had ever cherished.

Marcus Sterling stepped forward, holding a single, crisp document clipped inside a black leather folder. He knelt beside Andrew, dropping the folder onto the floor right in front of the kneeling man's hands.

"Read it, Mr. Vance," Marcus instructed coldly, his voice devoid of any professional courtesy.

Andrew slowly raised his tear-streaked face, his trembling fingers reaching out to open the folder. The heading at the top of the page read in bold, capital letters: MASTER ASSET SURRENDER AND PERMANENT WAIVER OF CLAIMS.

"What... what is this?" Andrew whispered, his voice cracking.

"It is the final dissolution of Vance Industries and all associated personal assets," Marcus explained, turning the pages to highlight the critical clauses. "By signing this document, you formally relinquish all corporate shares, patent rights, real estate claims, and future financial distributions associated with your name. Furthermore, you legally waive any right to contest the divorce proceedings or seek spousal support."

Andrew stared at the paper in horror. "If I sign this... I have nothing. Absolutely nothing. I won't even have a home or a car!"

"You had nothing to begin with, Mr. Vance," Marcus replied sharply. "Everything you ever possessed was financed, subsidized, and sustained by Miss Escalante. You were merely renting your life from her generosity."

Andrew looked up, his bloodshot eyes pleadingly locking onto Mariana’s back as she stood motionless by the window, silhouetted against the glittering city lights.

"Mariana... please," Andrew whimpered, crawling forward a few inches across the rug. "Have mercy. We were married for four years! We shared a home! Can't you leave me enough to start over? Just a small apartment, a car... something?"

Mariana slowly turned around. Her face was an impenetrable mask of cold, regal indifference.

"When you struck my face last night," Mariana said, her voice steady and chillingly quiet, "did you have mercy? When your mother insulted my family and threw my belongings into the street, did you show a single second of compassion?"

Andrew flinched, unable to meet her gaze.

"You took my patience, my loyalty, and my unconditional love, and you treated them like trash," Mariana continued, stepping closer until she stood directly above him. "You wanted power, Andrew? You wanted to feel like a king who could crush anyone beneath your heel? Well, here is your kingdom. Enjoy the view."

She pulled the heavy gold fountain pen from her breast pocket, held it out horizontally, and dropped it onto the document.

"Sign it," Mariana commanded. "Or spend the next twenty years in a federal prison cell alongside your brother Arthur, answering for the corporate embezzlement and financial fraud committed under your name."

The mention of prison snapped whatever remaining pride Andrew possessed. His hands shaking uncontrollably, he picked up the golden pen. The weight of the instrument felt heavier than a sledgehammer. With trembling strokes, he signed his name across the signature line at the bottom of the page: Andrew Vance.

The moment the ink dried, Marcus snatched the folder back, closed it with a sharp snap, and stood up.

"The transfer is complete," Marcus announced to the room.

Mariana turned back toward the window, dismissing him without a single parting word.

"Take him out," Mariana ordered the security operatives.

The two towering guards grabbed Andrew by his arms, hauling him up from the floor before he could even process what was happening. He didn't fight back. He hung between them like a broken doll, his legs dragging across the polished floor as they dragged him backward out of the executive suite.

The heavy obsidian doors closed behind him with a dull, heavy thud.

The penthouse returned to absolute silence.

Hector Escalante walked over to his daughter, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "It is finished, Mariana. The chapter is closed."

May you like

Mariana closed her eyes for a brief moment, letting out a long, slow breath as if shedding a heavy winter coat she had worn for four agonizing years.

"Yes, Father," she whispered, her eyes opening with a fierce, brilliant clarity. "It's finished. Now... it's time to build something new."
