Chapter 4 - THE EMPTY CLOSET

-4
The heavy silence inside the master suite felt suffocating. The massive walk-in closet, once filled with bespoke Italian suits, silk ties, custom shoes, and designer accessories, now looked like a looted storefront.
Andrew stood in the center of the room, staring blankly at the empty hangers rattling against the polished chrome rods. The sheriff’s deputies had made it abundantly clear: only personal clothing and basic necessities purchased prior to his marriage could leave the estate. Every suit, every watch, every cufflink bought during the last four years belonged to the Escalante Trust.
He reached out with a trembling hand, pulling a single, threadbare cotton shirt from the back of the shelf—a shirt he had worn four years ago, back when he lived in a cramped downtown studio apartment, struggling to keep his failing startup alive before he met Mariana.
Before Mariana walked into his life and quietly transformed him from a bankrupt nobody into a society titan.
“You can dress someone in designer clothes,” Margaret’s voice from the previous night echoed mockingly in his memory. “You can teach them how to attend expensive parties. But you can never change their blood.”
How ironic.
They had spent four years believing they were the blue-blood aristocrats, looking down on Mariana as an ordinary, uncultured outsider. They had mocked her silence, dismissed her contributions, and treated her like an unwanted servant in her own home.
And all the while, she had been the sun around which their entire universe revolved.
A sharp knock at the door broke his spiraling thoughts. Andrew didn't turn around. "Who is it?"
Thomas pushed the door open cautiously. The older estate manager looked older, his shoulders slumped, carrying a single cardboard moving box containing a few framed photographs and personal papers.
"Mr. Vance... the deputies are waiting downstairs. They’ve locked the southern vehicle gates, and the media trucks have already started gathering outside the perimeter walls," Thomas said quietly, his voice devoid of the subservient deference he had shown for years.
Andrew slowly turned around, holding the threadbare shirt against his chest. His eyes were bloodshot, his hair disheveled. "Thomas... how did this happen? You've been with the company for ten years. Did you never suspect... did you never know who she really was?"
Thomas looked at Andrew with a mixture of pity and contempt. "Sir... Mrs. Vance—or Miss Escalante, as I now understand—never wanted anyone to know. She wanted a normal life. She wanted a husband who loved her for who she was, not for her bank account. When you were on the verge of bankruptcy four years ago, it wasn't the venture capitalists who saved you. It was her father, Hector Escalante, who quietly transferred fifty million dollars into your corporate accounts under strict instructions that you must never find out."
Andrew felt a physical blow strike his chest, as if he had been punched in the stomach. "Fifty... fifty million?"
"And every year after that," Thomas continued steadily, "when your expansion projects failed, when your investments went sour, she was the one who quietly restructured your debts using her private discretionary funds. You thought you were a business genius, Mr. Vance. In reality, you were a toddler playing with a loaded weapon while your mother cheered from the sidelines."
The words cut deeper than any knife. Andrew staggered backward, sitting down heavily on the edge of the unmade king-sized bed. The same bed where he had slept beside his wife for four years, taking her loyalty for granted, treating her kindness as weakness, and ultimately raising his hand against her because his fragile ego couldn't handle a minor disagreement over a family heirloom.
"Where is she?" Andrew whispered, his voice cracking. "Where is Mariana?"
"She’s at the Escalante Group global headquarters," Thomas replied, turning toward the door with his box. "And I suggest you don't try to go there. Unless you want to spend the rest of your life answering to federal prosecutors regarding the Georgetown bridge audits."
The mention of the Georgetown bridge made Andrew freeze.
Arthur.
His older brother. The federal prosecutor.
"My brother..." Andrew breathed, panic gripping his throat. "Where is Arthur?"
"He was arrested an hour ago at the Department of Justice," Thomas said without turning back. "The Inspector General’s office executed a warrant based on financial records provided by the Escalante legal team. They found direct links between Arthur's offshore accounts and the cover-up of Elena Vance’s murder five years ago."

Thomas walked out of the room, closing the door softly behind him, leaving Andrew alone in the echoing emptiness of the master suite.
The house that had once echoed with arrogance, champagne toasts, and cruel laughter was now a tomb.
