Chapter 15 - THE FINAL SUNSET

-15

The sun began its slow, majestic descent over the Washington skyline, painting the horizon in brilliant strokes of amber, crimson, and deep violet.

High above the bustling streets, inside the private observatory lounge of the Escalante Tower penthouse, Mariana sat alone by the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows. A single cup of herbal tea rested on the table beside her, untouched.

She looked down at the glittering expanse of the city below—millions of lights twinkling like a fallen constellation across the urban grid. Every street, every bridge, every towering skyscraper was a testament to decades of family vision, relentless hard work, and unyielding discipline.

She thought back to the night in the marble mansion.

The sound of the slap.

The shattered coffee table.

The cruel laughter of a man who believed he was a master, standing beside a mistress who played a foolish game, surrounded by relatives blinded by their own inherited arrogance.

They had thought they were casting away a powerless, ordinary woman with nowhere else to go.

They had never realized that the woman they humiliated was the architect of their entire existence.

A soft chime sounded from the elevator foyer as the private doors slid open. Footsteps approached quietly across the walnut flooring, but Mariana didn't turn around. She didn't need to.

Marcus Sterling stepped into the lounge, holding a final, leather-bound dossier. He stopped a few paces away, waiting respectfully for her acknowledgment.

"Everything is prepared for tomorrow’s plenary session, Miss Escalante," Marcus reported quietly. "The international press corps has been briefed, the legal filings are sealed, and the global stakeholders have confirmed attendance."

Mariana turned her head slowly, looking past her reflection in the glass out toward the vast horizon.

"Thank you, Marcus," she said, her voice smooth and steady. "Let the world see what happens when you build a house of cards on top of an earthquake."

"Yes, Chairperson Escalante," Marcus replied with a respectful nod, turning to leave the penthouse in absolute silence.

The heavy obsidian doors closed once more, leaving Mariana alone with the gathering twilight.

She took a slow, deep breath, feeling the cool glass against her fingertips. The past four years were gone—washed away like dust in the rain. The pain, the betrayal, the humiliation—they were nothing more than distant shadows fading into the light of a new dawn.

She didn't hate Andrew. She didn't pity Margaret. She didn't fear Arthur.

They were simply chapters in a book she had already finished reading, closing the cover with a quiet, decisive snap.

Mariana Escalante stood up from her chair, her silhouette framed against the magnificent, glittering empire of her own creation, ready to step forward into a future where she would never, ever have to look back.
