Chapter 8 - The Howard Gala

-8

The grand ballroom of the Beaumont Hotel was a dazzling spectacle of wealth and excess. Massive crystal chandeliers cascaded light over hundreds of the city's most elite citizens, all dressed in haute couture and dripping with diamonds. Waiters in crisp white tuxedos circulated with silver trays of champagne and Beluga caviar. At the center of it all, playing the roles of gracious hosts, stood Richard and Eleanor Howard, with Vanessa Vance hovering conspicuously close by.

To the untrained eye, they were the picture of aristocratic perfection. But up close, the cracks were visible. Richard was drinking too fast, his laughter sounding forced and slightly manic. Mrs. Howard’s smile was brittle, her eyes constantly scanning the room like a hawk looking for predators. Vanessa was pale, her usual arrogant demeanor replaced by a jittery, nervous energy as she clung to Richard’s arm whenever Mrs. Howard wasn't looking.

"You need to calm down, Vanessa," Richard hissed through a fake smile as they posed for a society photographer. "You look completely terrified. People are starting to whisper."

"I can't help it," Vanessa whispered back, her voice shaking. "Every time the doors open, I think it's the police coming to arrest me. I feel like everyone knows."

"Nobody knows anything," Mrs. Howard interjected smoothly, appearing beside them like a ghost. "You are simply upset about the tragic accident that befell poor Elena. That is the narrative. Stick to it. Smile, nod, and say nothing of substance."

Outside the hotel, the torrential rain lashed against the pavement, hiding the silent, coordinated arrival of six unmarked police vans. Detective Ruiz stepped out into the storm, pulling up the collar of his trench coat. He was accompanied by two dozen uniformed officers, moving with grim, militaristic precision. They didn't hit the sirens. They didn't rush the front doors. They moved like a heavily armed shadow, bypassing the red carpet and entering through the vast kitchen loading bays.

Ruiz led the strike team up the service stairs, his face a mask of absolute, unforgiving resolve. He had spent years watching men like Richard Howard buy their way out of justice, watching wealth shield monsters from the consequences of their actions. Tonight, that immunity ended.

In an idling black SUV parked across the street, Elena sat wrapped in her dark coat, watching the hotel entrance through tinted windows. A tactical radio sat on her lap, tuned to the police frequency. She listened to the terse, professional chatter as Ruiz’s team secured the perimeter of the ballroom, blocking all exits.

"Team one in position at the main doors," a voice crackled over the radio.

"Team two securing the terrace and side exits," another followed.

"This is Ruiz," the detective's voice echoed in the small cabin of the SUV. "Execute warrants. Go, go, go."

Inside the ballroom, the string quartet was midway through a lively waltz when the massive double doors of the main entrance were suddenly thrust open, violently interrupting the music. The elegant crowd gasped and parted like the Red Sea as Detective Ruiz strode into the room, flanked by a dozen uniformed officers with their hands resting threateningly on their holstered weapons.

The music ground to a chaotic, discordant halt. The chatter died instantly, replaced by a stunned, heavy silence. Five hundred pairs of eyes turned to watch the police march directly toward the center of the room, cutting a path straight to the Howard family.

Richard’s champagne flute slipped from his fingers, shattering against the polished hardwood floor. The sound was like a gunshot in the silent room. Vanessa let out a tiny, strangled squeak of terror and instinctively tried to step behind Richard, but a female officer swiftly flanked her, blocking her retreat. Mrs. Howard stood her ground, her back rigid, but the color had completely drained from her aristocratic face.

"Richard Howard, Eleanor Howard, and Vanessa Vance," Ruiz’s voice boomed, projecting across the cavernous space without the need for a microphone. "You are all under arrest."

A collective gasp ripped through the crowd. Camera flashes suddenly began to pop as society reporters realized they were witnessing the downfall of the decade.

"Detective Ruiz, this is a profound outrage," Mrs. Howard stated, finding her voice and attempting to project her usual intimidating authority. "You are interrupting a highly publicized charity event. Do you have any idea who you are dealing with? I will have your badge for this ridiculous stunt!"

Ruiz didn't even blink. He pulled a thick stack of folded papers from his jacket pocket and thrust them toward her. "I have exactly the right idea of who I am dealing with, Mrs. Howard. These are warrants signed by Judge Harrison. Attempted murder, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice." He turned his cold gaze to Vanessa, who was now visibly hyperventilating. "Cuff them. All three of them. Read them their rights. And get them out of my sight."
