Chapter 1 - The Shattered Marble

THE MISTRESS PUSHED THE PREGNANT WIFE DOWN THE STAIRCASE... BUT SHE DIDN’T KNOW THE VICTIM HAD ALREADY SET HER OWN TRAP.
The entire mansion fell silent when Elena’s body crashed onto the cold marble floor below.
Vanessa stood frozen on the staircase, her face filled with fake terror before she quickly rushed into Mrs. Howard’s arms.
“I didn’t want this to happen,” she whispered through tears. “She came toward me first. I only pushed her away because I was afraid.”
Mrs. Howard stared down at Elena in disbelief.
The pregnant woman lay completely still.
Her hand rested protectively over her stomach.
Her breathing was weak.
Her skin was pale.
To anyone standing there, Elena looked like a woman who had lost everything in one terrible moment.
But behind her closed eyes, Elena was thinking clearly.
Vanessa continued her performance, raising her voice so everyone could hear.
“She has been poisoning this family since she arrived!” Vanessa cried. “She never loved Mr. Howard. She only wanted his fortune, this house, and everything that belongs to him!”
Nobody noticed Elena’s fingers quietly searching inside her cardigan.
Her phone was waiting there.
One tap.
Then another.
The call went through.
And suddenly, the fear disappeared from Elena’s expression.
What remained was cold confidence.
She covered the phone with her hand and whispered:
“Detective Ruiz... it happened.”
A short silence followed.
“Send your team immediately.”
Then she ended the call.
Closed her eyes.
And returned to the role Vanessa believed she had created.
The fall was genuine.
The pain was undeniable.
But Vanessa never understood one thing...
Elena had been preparing for this moment long before she was pushed.
The mansion was filled with hidden cameras.
Every conversation.
Every threat.
Every secret arrangement.
Every piece of Vanessa’s plan had been captured.
And when Detective Ruiz walked through those doors...
Vanessa’s carefully built world would begin falling apart.
Because the woman she tried to destroy had already collected the evidence needed to destroy her.

The cold, unforgiving surface of the marble floor seemed to seep directly into Elena’s bones, acting as an anchor that kept her tethered to the waking world despite the agonizing flares of pain shooting up her spine. She lay there, perfectly still, a masterpiece of calculated vulnerability. Every shallow breath she took was measured, every flicker of her eyelids carefully suppressed. The metallic taste of blood blossomed in the corner of her mouth, a sharp reminder of the physical toll her gamble had exacted. But this pain was nothing compared to the psychological agony she had endured over the past eight months in this very house. Above her, the grand crystal chandelier cast scattered prisms of light across the vast foyer of the Howard mansion, illuminating the dramatic tableau playing out on the grand sweeping staircase.
Vanessa’s voice echoed through the cavernous space, a sickeningly sweet concoction of feigned terror and manufactured innocence. "I didn't want this to happen!" the mistress wailed, burying her face into the silk-clad shoulder of Mrs. Howard, the imperious matriarch who ruled the family with an iron fist and a heart of stone. Mrs. Howard stood rigid, her sharp, calculating eyes darting between the crumpled figure of her pregnant daughter-in-law and the trembling woman clinging to her. The older woman had always harbored a deep-seated disdain for Elena, viewing her as an opportunistic interloper who had ensnared her beloved son, Richard, with her beauty and cunning. Vanessa, on the other hand, was the daughter of a wealthy associate, the woman Mrs. Howard had always intended for Richard. This tragedy, in Mrs. Howard’s eyes, was a horrific but perhaps necessary course correction of fate.
"She came toward me first," Vanessa sobbed, her voice trembling with a theatricality that would have earned her a standing ovation on any stage. "I only pushed her away because I was afraid. She had this look in her eyes, Mrs. Howard... a terrifying, unhinged look! You know how she gets!"
Elena listened to the lies spilling from Vanessa's glossed lips, her mind remaining a sanctuary of icy clarity amidst the chaos. She focused on the steady, rhythmic thumping of her own heart, and more importantly, the subtle, fluttering heartbeat of the child growing within her. The baby was safe. She had meticulously practiced the fall for weeks when the house was empty, consulting quietly with a stunt professional under the guise of researching a role, learning how to tuck her chin, round her shoulders, and absorb the brutal impact with her extremities rather than her fragile torso. It was a perilous, terrifying risk, but the alternative—allowing Vanessa and Richard to slowly poison her, to strip away her sanity, her fortune, and her life—was infinitely worse. They thought they were the predators, but they had unknowingly walked right into a meticulously constructed cage.
The distant, mournful wail of police sirens began to slice through the oppressive silence of the sprawling estate. The sound started as a faint whisper on the wind, winding its way up the long, tree-lined driveway, growing louder and more insistent with each passing second. Vanessa froze, the fake tears instantly drying up as the flashing red and blue lights began to strobe violently through the massive stained-glass windows of the foyer, painting the opulent walls with the chaotic colors of impending justice.
"The police?" Mrs. Howard gasped, her meticulously plucked eyebrows shooting up toward her hairline. "Who called the police? We handle our family matters internally! We do not invite public spectacles into this house!"
Elena allowed a tiny, almost imperceptible smirk to grace her pale lips before she let her head loll slightly to the side, maintaining her ruse of semi-consciousness. She had made the call. The phone hidden in the deep pocket of her oversized cashmere cardigan was still warm against her hip. Detective Alejandro Ruiz was not just any police officer; he was a phantom from Elena’s past, a man who owed his career and his sister's life to a tip Elena had provided years ago during a sprawling corruption investigation. He was the one man she could absolutely trust in a city that was practically owned by the Howard family's immense wealth.
The heavy oak double doors burst open, and a swarm of uniformed officers flooded the opulent space, their heavy boots tracking dirt across the pristine, million-dollar Persian rugs. At the center of the organized chaos walked Detective Ruiz, a tall, imposing figure with eyes like obsidian and an aura of uncompromising, hardened authority. He took in the scene with a practiced, sweeping glance: the weeping mistress gripping the railing, the stoic and furious matriarch, and the broken, pregnant wife bleeding on the floor.
"Nobody moves a muscle," Ruiz commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that demanded absolute, unquestioning obedience. He strode purposefully toward Elena, dropping to one knee beside her. He leaned in close, his broad shoulders blocking the view of the two women whispering frantically on the stairs. "Paramedics are ten seconds away," he whispered, so softly that only Elena could hear. "You did well, El. The trap is sprung. Now let us do our job."

Elena squeezed her eyes shut, finally allowing a single, genuine tear of sheer relief to spill over her lashes and track through the dust on her cheek. The steel jaws were closing. Vanessa, suddenly realizing the gravity of the police presence, began to descend the stairs, her steps hesitant and trembling. "Detective, you have to understand," she pleaded, her voice taking on a desperate, high-pitched whine. "It was pure self-defense. She attacked me like a wild animal. She's been unstable ever since she got pregnant. Ask Mrs. Howard! She'll tell you everything!"
Ruiz slowly rose to his feet, turning his piercing gaze upon Vanessa. He didn't say a word, simply stared at her with a look of profound, chilling indifference that made Vanessa shrink back against the mahogany banister. The silence stretched, tight and fragile as a wire about to snap, until the frantic rush of paramedics shattered the tension. They swarmed Elena, swiftly securing a neck brace, checking her vitals with urgent precision, and smoothly transferring her onto a rigid yellow backboard. As they lifted her, Elena’s hand slipped out from under the thermal blanket, her fingers lightly tapping the side of her cardigan where the phone lay hidden. Ruiz caught the subtle movement. He gave a microscopic nod. The first act of Vanessa's ultimate destruction had begun, and the mistress was utterly, hopelessly oblivious to the fact that she was dancing perfectly to a dead woman's tune.
