Chapter 7 - The Final Visit

-7

The morning of the Howard Charity Gala arrived with a heavy, oppressive gloom, dark rain clouds mirroring the impending storm that was about to shatter the family's legacy. In her hospital room, Elena was out of bed for the first time, slowly pacing the floor to keep her circulation moving. The physical pain was a constant, dull ache, but her mind was operating with razor-sharp clarity. Today was the culmination of a year of suffering, planning, and meticulous deceit.

The door opened, and Richard walked in, looking spectacularly handsome in his custom-tailored Tom Ford tuxedo. He carried a massive bouquet of red roses, a painfully cliché gesture that made Elena want to vomit. He played the part of the devoted, tragic husband flawlessly, his face set in lines of exhaustion and deep concern.

"How are you feeling today, my love?" Richard asked, setting the flowers down and moving to embrace her.

Elena stiffened, allowing the hug but keeping her arms firmly at her sides. "I am sore, Richard. And I am tired. Mostly, I am tired of being afraid."

Richard pulled back, his eyes searching hers for any sign of deception. "You don't need to be afraid anymore, Elena. I've spoken to our lawyers. They are dealing with the police. Ruiz is a bulldog, but he's out of his depth against our legal team. We are going to protect you. We are going to put this awful accident behind us."

"An accident," Elena repeated flatly, staring directly into his eyes. "You still insist it was an accident, even after everything I've told you. Even after I told you she tried to kill me."

Richard sighed, rubbing his temples in a pantomime of extreme stress. "Elena, please. Vanessa is devastated. She is a wreck. She made a terrible mistake, she panicked during an argument, but she is not a murderer. You have to let this go. For the sake of the family. For the sake of the baby. We cannot have a public scandal. The gala tonight... I have to face five hundred people and pretend everything is fine while my wife is in a hospital bed."

"So go," Elena said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Go to your gala, Richard. Go smile and drink champagne with Vanessa. Play the perfect host. I will stay here, where it's safe."

Richard looked relieved, quickly checking his gold Rolex. "I'll be back first thing in the morning. I love you, Elena. We will get through this. I promise."

He kissed her forehead and quickly exited the room, eager to escape the suffocating reality of his own actions. Elena stood completely still until the door clicked shut. Then, she walked over to the closet and pulled out a small, unassuming duffel bag Ruiz had dropped off the night before. Inside was a sleek, black maternity dress, sensible flat shoes, and a heavy, dark coat.

She began to dress, her movements slow but deliberate. She winced as she pulled the fabric over her bruised ribs, but the physical pain was eclipsed by a surging adrenaline. She wasn't staying in the hospital. The trap she had built required her personal presence to finally snap shut.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand. It was Ruiz.

"The transport is ready," the detective said. "My men are positioned at the service elevator. We will slip you out through the basement loading dock. The press is camped at the front entrance of the hospital, so we have to move quietly."

"I'm ready," Elena said, zipping up her coat. "Are the arrest warrants signed?"

"Signed, sealed, and currently sitting in my breast pocket," Ruiz confirmed, a grim satisfaction in his voice. "The judge took one look at the video files and almost fell out of his chair. We have warrants for Vanessa Vance for attempted murder, Richard Howard for conspiracy to commit murder, and Eleanor Howard for accessory after the fact and obstruction of justice. We are taking down the whole royal family in one fell swoop."

"Good," Elena whispered, stepping out into the quiet hospital corridor, flanked immediately by two plainclothes officers. "Let's go crash a party."

As she was escorted down through the hidden bowels of the hospital, Elena allowed herself a moment to think about the baby. This child, conceived in a marriage built on lies, had become her absolute anchor. She was destroying this corrupted family not just for her own vengeance, but to protect her child from being raised in a nest of vipers. She was burning down the Howard empire so she could build something clean and pure from the ashes. Tonight, the past would be destroyed, and her future would finally begin.
