Chapter 5 - The Viper in the Nest

Back at the Howard estate, the atmosphere was suffocating. The police had finally finished their forensic sweep and departed, leaving behind a profound, terrifying silence that echoed through the grand halls. Vanessa paced aggressively back and forth across the expensive Persian rug in Richard’s study, a glass of expensive bourbon clutched tightly in her trembling hand. She had drained half the bottle since returning from the police station, desperately trying to drown the creeping realization that she had made a catastrophic error.
Mrs. Howard sat rigidly in a high-backed leather armchair, watching Vanessa's frantic movements with a look of intense, thinly veiled disgust. The matriarch was not angry about the attempted murder; she was furious about the sloppy execution and the ensuing scandal. In the Howard family, immorality was acceptable, even expected, as long as it was handled with discretion and elegance. Vanessa’s crude, violent act on the main staircase was the exact opposite of elegance.
"Stop pacing, Vanessa, you are giving me a migraine," Mrs. Howard snapped, her voice cutting through the silence like a whip. "You look like a trapped rat."
Vanessa whirled around, her eyes wide and wild. "I am trapped! That detective, Ruiz... he knows I'm lying. He practically told me to my face. He said the bruising on Elena proves she was pushed from behind. He's building a case, Eleanor! He's going to arrest me!"
"He is trying to frighten you into a confession, you foolish girl," Mrs. Howard replied coolly, taking a slow, measured sip of her own drink. "It is a standard police interrogation tactic. They have no witnesses. It is your word against the word of a highly emotional, unstable pregnant woman. We will hire the best defense attorneys on the eastern seaboard. We will bury the prosecution in paperwork and character assassinations. Elena has no family, no prominent friends. We will paint her as a gold-digging psychotic who tried to frame you to secure her place in this family."
"But Richard said she remembers!" Vanessa cried, tears of genuine panic finally spilling over her cheeks. "He just called from the hospital. She knows I shoved her. If she testifies..."
"Let her testify," Mrs. Howard interrupted, a cruel smile playing on her wrinkled lips. "By the time our lawyers are done with her on the stand, the jury will think she threw herself down the stairs just to ruin your reputation. You just need to hold your nerve, Vanessa. Do not panic. Do not deviate from the self-defense story. And for God's sake, stop calling Richard on unsecured lines. If the police pull his phone records, you will both look highly suspicious."
Vanessa took a deep, shuddering breath, trying to absorb the older woman's icy confidence. "Okay. Okay, you're right. I just need to stay calm. We own this town. The police can't touch us without absolute proof."
Hidden inside the hollow base of the heavy brass lamp on Richard's desk, the micro-camera captured every second of the exchange. It captured Mrs. Howard explicitly aiding in the cover-up, legally tying her to the conspiracy after the fact. It captured Vanessa's admission of guilt and her terror at being caught.
Miles away in his precinct office, Detective Ruiz watched the live feed on his monitor, shaking his head in disbelief. They were handing him the case wrapped in a neat little bow. But Ruiz knew that simple arrests wouldn't satisfy Elena. A standard trial could drag on for years, allowing the Howards to use their massive wealth to manipulate evidence, bribe witnesses, and eventually secure a mistrial or a light sentence. Elena didn't just want them in jail; she wanted them utterly destroyed, stripped of their wealth, their reputation, and their power.
Ruiz picked up his secure phone and dialed Elena's hospital room. "I just watched your mother-in-law officially join the conspiracy," he reported dryly. "She's counseling Vanessa on how to commit perjury and destroy your character in court. The whole family is rotten to the absolute core."
"I told you they were," Elena's voice replied, sounding stronger now. "Eleanor Howard built that empire on ruined lives and silenced victims. It's only fitting she falls with it. Are the financial documents ready?"
"My forensic accountants have been working around the clock," Ruiz confirmed, pulling up a massive spreadsheet on his secondary monitor. "You were right. Richard has completely mismanaged the subsidiary companies. He’s millions in debt to some very dangerous people. The grandfather’s trust fund that activates upon the baby's birth is the only liquid asset keeping this family from total bankruptcy. He was desperate. He needed you dead, but he needed the baby to survive long enough to trigger the inheritance clause."
"A clause that names the surviving parent as the sole executor of the child's estate," Elena finished, her voice turning hard and cold. "He would have controlled billions. But he underestimated me. When do we strike, Alejandro?"

"We let them build their false narrative for two more days," Ruiz said, his eyes scanning the digital evidence files. "Let them lie to the press. Let them lie to their high-society friends. The higher they climb on their mountain of lies, the harder the fall will be. On Friday, during the annual Howard Charity Gala... we drop the hammer."
"Friday it is," Elena said softly. "Make sure you bring handcuffs, Detective. It’s going to be a very crowded party."
