Chapter 2 - The Interrogation of Lies

-2

The precinct interrogation room was a stark, depressing contrast to the luxurious, gilded halls of the Howard mansion. The walls were painted a sickly, peeling shade of institutional green, illuminated by a single, harsh fluorescent bulb that hummed with a relentless, annoying buzz. Vanessa sat at the scarred metal table, her designer silk blouse clinging uncomfortably to her skin, her perfectly manicured nails drumming a frantic, erratic rhythm against the cold steel surface. She had been sitting there for what felt like hours, abandoned with a lukewarm cup of bitter coffee that tasted like ash in her mouth. Her initial confidence, bolstered by Mrs. Howard's reassuring presence at the estate, was beginning to evaporate, replaced by a creeping, icy dread that gnawed at the edges of her sanity.

The heavy steel door finally opened with a loud, metallic clank, and Detective Ruiz stepped into the room. He didn't carry a notepad or a file folder, just a small, silver digital recorder that he placed deliberately in the center of the table. He pulled out the screeching metal chair opposite Vanessa and sat down, folding his large hands together. His obsidian eyes locked onto hers, unblinking and unnervingly calm.

"Let's go over your statement one more time, Ms. Vance," Ruiz began, his voice smooth but carrying an undeniable edge of steel. "For the record. You claim that Elena Howard, a woman eight months pregnant, aggressively charged up a steep flight of marble stairs to attack you, and in a momentary panic, you simply put your hands up to defend yourself, resulting in her tragic fall."

"Yes! That is exactly what happened!" Vanessa snapped, her voice shrill with indignation and defensive panic. "I’ve told your officers this five times already. Elena is completely unhinged. She’s been paranoid, accusing Richard and me of... of ridiculous things. She thought we were plotting against her. It was the pregnancy hormones, they drove her completely mad! She came at me with her hands raised, aiming for my throat. What was I supposed to do? Let her strangle me in my own home?"

"Your own home?" Ruiz raised a single, thick eyebrow, a gesture that conveyed volumes of skepticism. "I was under the impression the mansion belonged to Richard and Elena Howard. You are... what, exactly? A permanent houseguest? A highly compensated assistant?"

Vanessa's face flushed a deep, ugly crimson. "I am a close, personal friend of the family," she spat, her hands curling into tight fists. "Richard and I have known each other since childhood. Mrs. Howard practically considers me a daughter. Something Elena could never achieve, no matter how much of Richard's money she threw around. Elena hated me for it. She was jealous, deeply insecure, and dangerously violent."

Ruiz leaned back in his chair, remaining silent for a long, agonizing minute. He let Vanessa stew in her own defensive anger, watching the subtle tics in her facial muscles, the rapid blinking of her eyes. "It's a fascinating narrative, Ms. Vance," he finally said softly. "The crazed, jealous wife attacking the innocent, angelic family friend. It plays very well. It's almost cinematic. There's just one minor, insignificant problem with your story."

Vanessa swallowed hard, the dryness in her throat suddenly unbearable. "What problem? I'm telling the absolute truth. Mrs. Howard saw the aftermath. She knows Elena is unstable!"

"Mrs. Howard saw the aftermath, yes," Ruiz agreed smoothly. "But she did not see the incident itself. She was in the east wing conservatory at the time of the fall. We checked. You were the only two on that staircase." Ruiz leaned forward, closing the distance between them, his presence suddenly overwhelming and suffocating. "The problem, Vanessa, is that physics is a very stubborn science. A woman who is pushed defensively, backwards, tends to fall on her back or side. The bruising on Elena Howard's body, the specific trajectory of her descent... they tell a completely different story. They tell the story of a woman who was violently shoved from behind while she was walking down the stairs, away from you."

Vanessa felt the blood drain completely from her face. The room seemed to tilt sideways for a terrifying second. "That... that's impossible. Your forensic team is incompetent. She came at me! I swear it!" she protested loudly, but the tremor in her voice betrayed her escalating panic.

"We will see what the evidence says in due time," Ruiz stated, standing up and picking up his digital recorder. "In the meantime, you are formally instructed not to leave the city. Do not attempt to contact Richard Howard, and do not attempt to visit the hospital. If you try to flee, I will personally hunt you down and drag you back here in chains. Have a pleasant evening, Ms. Vance."

As Ruiz exited the room, leaving Vanessa alone with her racing, terrified thoughts, he pulled out his personal cell phone. He dialed a secure number, putting it to his ear as he walked down the bustling precinct hallway. "It's Ruiz," he said quietly when the line connected. "She's sticking to the self-defense lie, just as you predicted. She's terrified, but she thinks she can talk her way out of it. How are you holding up?"

From her hospital bed, surrounded by the rhythmic beeping of cardiac monitors and the sterile smell of antiseptic, Elena’s voice came through the receiver, sounding weak but undeniably triumphant. "I'm sore, Alejandro. Extremely sore. But the baby is perfectly fine. The doctors are amazed I didn't suffer a placental abruption."

"You took a hell of a risk, Elena. Too big of a risk," Ruiz muttered, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "If your angle had been off by even an inch, we'd be having a very different conversation right now. A conversation with a coroner."

"I had no choice, and you know it," Elena replied, her voice hardening with cold resolve. "If I hadn't forced their hand, Richard would have eventually found a way to kill me quietly. The arsenic in my tea, the tampered brakes on my car... they were getting impatient. I needed an undeniable, violent act. I needed a crime scene."

"Well, you got one," Ruiz said. "I've dispatched the tech team to the mansion under a covert warrant. They are retrieving the hard drives right now. The Howards think we're just sweeping for physical evidence. They have no idea about the digital trap."

"Good," Elena whispered, staring up at the white ceiling of her hospital room, a dark, dangerous smile spreading across her bruised face. "Let them sleep comfortably tonight, Detective. Let them believe they've won. Because tomorrow, we are going to burn their entire dynasty to the ground."
