Chapter 10 - The Hidden Will

-10
The morning after the gala, the city awoke to a media firestorm of unprecedented proportions. The front pages of every newspaper and the top story on every news network featured the humiliating photographs of the Howard family being dragged out of the Beaumont Hotel in handcuffs. The scandal was absolute; the financial markets reacted violently, with shares in Howard subsidiary companies plummeting as investors fled the radioactive brand.
Inside the sterile confines of her hospital room, Elena sat calmly in a plush chair, dressed in a soft cashmere robe. Across from her sat a small army of people: Detective Ruiz, a ruthless senior prosecutor named Sarah Jenkins, and Elena’s personal attorney, a sharp-eyed man named Marcus Vance—no relation to the imprisoned mistress, a cosmic irony Elena found deeply amusing.
"The arraignment is in two hours," Prosecutor Jenkins stated, reviewing a massive binder of evidence. "Given the flight risk and the sheer weight of the evidence—specifically the undeniable video and audio recordings you provided, Mrs. Howard—the judge has preemptively denied bail for all three of them. They are going straight to Rikers."
"Vanessa Vance hasn't stopped talking since she got to the precinct," Ruiz added, leaning against the doorframe. "She waived her right to an attorney. She's desperately trying to cut a plea deal by throwing Richard completely under the bus. She outlined the entire plot, the financial motives, the timeline. It perfectly matches the digital evidence we recovered from your servers, Elena. The case is a slam dunk."
"What about the finances, Marcus?" Elena asked, turning to her lawyer. This was the final, crucial piece of the puzzle.
Marcus adjusted his glasses, a predatory smile crossing his face. "This is where your foresight truly becomes legendary, Elena. As you suspected, Richard has been secretly bankrupting the main Howard holding company to cover massive gambling debts and terrible offshore investments. The only real money left in the family is the grandfather's irrevocable trust fund."
"The trust fund that transfers to the child upon birth," Jenkins clarified.
"Exactly," Marcus said. "Now, under normal circumstances, if Elena had died, Richard, as the surviving parent, would become the sole executor and controller of those billions until the child turned twenty-five. He would have had unrestricted access to the money."
"But?" Ruiz prompted, knowing Elena always had a trap door.
"But," Marcus continued, "three months ago, Elena convinced Richard to sign an addendum to the prenuptial agreement under the guise of 'estate tax planning.' Hidden deep within fifty pages of dense legalese was a very specific morality clause. It states that if either spouse is convicted of a felony involving bodily harm against the other, they forfeit all rights to the marital estate, including executor status over any family trusts."
Ruiz let out a low whistle. "You stripped him of the money before he even pushed you."
"I knew what he was planning," Elena said, her voice cold and devoid of emotion. "I knew his motive was the trust fund. I made sure that the very act of trying to kill me would legally permanently separate him from the only thing he truly cared about. With him going to prison, and Eleanor implicated in the conspiracy, I am the sole legal guardian of this child, and the sole controller of the Howard fortune."
"It's brilliant," Jenkins admitted, looking at Elena with a mixture of respect and slight fear. "The Howards are completely ruined. They have no money for high-priced defense attorneys, their assets are frozen due to the criminal investigation, and they are facing decades in federal prison."
Elena stood up slowly, walking over to the large window overlooking the city skyline. The rain had cleared, leaving a bright, crisp morning in its wake. The city below, much of which was built on Howard money and Howard corruption, looked different today. It looked clean.
"They thought I was weak," Elena said softly to the glass. "They thought because I didn't come from money, because I was pregnant and vulnerable, that I was prey. They didn't realize that a mother protecting her unborn child is the most dangerous creature on earth."
She turned back to the room, her expression hardening into a mask of pure steel. "Prepare the divorce papers, Marcus. Extreme prejudice. I want full custody, I want every remaining asset liquidated and transferred to my private accounts, and I want a restraining order keeping him away from me and my child for the rest of his miserable life."

"Consider it done, Elena," Marcus nodded, packing his briefcase.
As the lawyers and the detective filed out of the room to execute the final destruction of the Howard family, Elena placed both hands on her stomach. The pain in her bruised back was fading, replaced by a profound, overwhelming sense of peace. The trap had worked flawlessly. The predator was dead, the mistress was caged, and the matriarch was broken.
