Chapter 4 - The Husband’s Façade

The scent of expensive lilies and sterile hospital bleach mingled in the air of Elena’s private recovery suite, creating a nauseating olfactory cocktail. Elena lay propped up against a mountain of white pillows, a heavily bruised cheekbone and a splinted wrist bearing silent testament to her violent descent down the marble staircase. Her eyes were closed, her breathing slow and even, painting a perfect picture of a battered, exhausted victim clinging to life.
The heavy wooden door to her suite creaked open with agonizing slowness. Footsteps, hesitant and heavy, padded across the linoleum floor. Elena didn't need to open her eyes to know who it was; she could smell the distinctive, expensive musk of Richard’s Tom Ford cologne long before he reached her bedside.
"Elena... my god, Elena, sweetheart," Richard whispered, his voice trembling with an expertly crafted layer of sorrow and shock. He pulled up a chair and gently took her uninjured hand in his, his thumbs lightly tracing her knuckles.
Elena slowly opened her eyes, blinking against the harsh fluorescent light. She forced a weak, pathetic smile, looking at her husband. Richard looked terrible—his eyes were bloodshot, his designer suit was wrinkled, and his hair was uncharacteristically messy. To the casual observer, he was the picture of a grief-stricken, terrified husband who had almost lost the love of his life. But Elena saw the microscopic tightening of his jaw, the subtle, calculating glint in his eyes as he assessed her injuries. He wasn't relieved she was alive; he was analyzing how badly Vanessa had botched the job.
"Richard..." Elena breathed, letting her voice crack perfectly. "You're here. I was so scared."
"I came as soon as I heard, my love. I was in a board meeting across town. When mother called and told me what happened... I thought my heart stopped," Richard lied flawlessly, pressing a gentle kiss to the back of her hand. "Vanessa told the police you two had a terrible argument. That you slipped while... while trying to confront her."
Elena let out a ragged, fearful sob, her free hand instinctively moving to protect her swollen belly. "She pushed me, Richard. I was walking down the stairs, trying to get away from her screaming, and she shoved me. Hard. Right in the middle of my back. She wanted to kill me. She wanted to kill our baby."
Richard’s face tightened into a mask of righteous indignation. "That's insane. Vanessa can be dramatic, but she would never do something so monstrous. You must have been confused, sweetheart. The shock of the fall... the trauma... it can scramble your memories. The police said you were highly emotional."
There it is, Elena thought, a freezing rage settling deep in her chest. The gaslighting. The foundation of his defense. He was already laying the groundwork to have her declared an unreliable witness, a hysterical, hormonally imbalanced pregnant woman who couldn't tell reality from a stress-induced hallucination.
"I know what happened, Richard," Elena insisted, her voice dropping to an urgent, frightened whisper. "She hates me. She wants me gone. You have to believe me. Please, you have to protect us."
"I will protect you, Elena. I promise you that," Richard soothed, reaching out to stroke her hair. His touch made her skin crawl, every instinct screaming at her to recoil from the murderer sitting beside her. "But you need to calm down. Stress is terrible for the baby. We will sort all of this out when you're home. Vanessa is devastated. She's practically inconsolable at the house."
"I don't want her in my house," Elena demanded, allowing a flash of genuine anger to pierce her victim facade. "If she is there when I return, I am leaving, and I am taking the baby with me."
Richard’s eyes darkened for a fraction of a second, a terrifying glimpse of the monster lurking beneath the polished exterior. The threat of losing the baby—and by extension, the grandfather's massive trust fund—was the only thing that truly frightened him. "Don't be ridiculous, Elena. You aren't going anywhere. This is a misunderstanding. I will talk to Vanessa. I will handle it. Just rest."
As Richard stood up to leave, promising to return with her favorite flowers and some decent food, Elena turned her face away, staring blankly out the hospital window. She had played her part flawlessly. She had given him the false sense of security he desperately craved. Richard was leaving this room entirely convinced that Elena was just a weak, confused woman who could be easily manipulated and ultimately disposed of at a later, more convenient date.
The moment the door clicked shut behind him, Elena’s weak demeanor vanished entirely. She sat up slightly, wincing at the pain in her ribs, and reached for the small, secure tablet Ruiz had smuggled into her room disguised inside a hollowed-out box of chocolates. She booted up the device and tapped into the live feed of the hospital corridor.
She watched on the screen as Richard walked away from her room. As soon as he was out of sight of the nurses' station, he pulled out his cell phone and furiously dialed a number. The audio was slightly muffled by the corridor, but Elena had planted a listening device in the lining of his suit jacket three days ago.

His voice came through the tablet's earpiece, cold, furious, and utterly devoid of the warmth he had just displayed. "Vanessa? It's me. You stupid, incompetent bitch. She remembers everything. She knows you pushed her. I told you to make it look like an accident, not a blatant execution! Now I have to spend the next week convincing the police she's insane, all while pretending to be the doting husband. Do not say another word to the cops. Do you understand me? We have a massive problem."
Elena smiled, a terrifying, predatory expression that didn't reach her eyes. The husband's facade was crumbling, and he was doing all the heavy lifting himself.
