Chapter 6 - The First Crack

The next forty-eight hours were a masterclass in psychological warfare. Elena remained in the hospital, playing the terrified, fragile victim to absolute perfection. She refused to see anyone except Richard, and even then, she would visibly flinch whenever he made sudden movements, tears silently streaming down her face as she begged him to keep Vanessa away from her. Richard, trapped in his role as the concerned husband, was forced to sit by her bed for hours, soothing her with hollow promises while secretly seething with impatience and anxiety.
Meanwhile, Detective Ruiz began applying pressure to the edges of the Howard family's carefully constructed fortress. He didn't reveal the existence of the video and audio evidence. Instead, he used traditional police work to slowly suffocate them. He subpoenaed the mansion's staff—the maids, the chef, the groundskeeper. Under the threat of perjury and obstruction charges, the veneer of loyalty bought by Howard money began to crack.
The head housekeeper, a terrified woman named Maria who had worked for the family for a decade, sat in Ruiz's office, twisting a tissue into shreds.
"I don't want to get in trouble, Detective," Maria whispered, glancing nervously at the two-way mirror. "Mrs. Howard, she... she fires anyone who speaks out of turn. She ruins them."
"Mrs. Howard is not going to be able to ruin anyone ever again, Maria. I guarantee you that," Ruiz said gently, sliding a glass of water toward her. "I just need the truth. How did Vanessa Vance treat Elena?"
Maria hesitated, swallowing hard. "Terribly. Ms. Vance acted like she was the lady of the house. She would constantly belittle Mrs. Elena, mocking her clothes, her background. And when Mrs. Elena got pregnant... Ms. Vance lost her mind. She would scream at Mr. Richard behind closed doors. I heard her once, in the kitchen, telling him that the baby was a parasite ruining her future."
"Did you ever see Vanessa become physically violent?" Ruiz pressed.
Maria nodded slowly. "Yes. Two weeks ago. Mrs. Elena was making tea in the kitchen. Ms. Vance walked in and deliberately bumped into her, hard. The boiling water spilled everywhere, barely missing Mrs. Elena's stomach. Ms. Vance just laughed and said she was clumsy. But it wasn't an accident. She wanted to hurt her."
Ruiz carefully documented every word. He knew he didn't strictly need the staff's testimony with the video evidence he possessed, but building a mountain of corroborating witness statements would make the impending trial an absolute slaughter. It would strip away any defense the high-priced lawyers could muster.
Back at the mansion, the tension was reaching a boiling point. Richard returned from the hospital, exhausted and furious. He found Vanessa in the conservatory, smoking a cigarette—a habit she usually hid from Mrs. Howard.
"She's playing me," Richard snarled, throwing his keys onto a glass table, shattering the silence. "Elena is playing the terrified victim so well the nurses practically look at me like I'm a monster just for walking into the room. She keeps insisting you pushed her. She's not changing her story, Vanessa. Not one bit."
Vanessa crushed the cigarette out aggressively in a potted orchid. "Then we have to escalate. If she won't back down, we need to make sure she never makes it to a courtroom. You need to hire someone, Richard. A professional. Someone to get into that hospital room and finish the job."
Richard stared at her, genuine shock breaking through his anger. "Are you insane? You want to order a hit on my pregnant wife while she's under police guard in a hospital? Do you want to go to the electric chair, Vanessa? Because that is how you go to the electric chair! We are already walking a razor's edge here!"
"Well, what is your brilliant plan, Richard?!" Vanessa screamed, her voice echoing off the glass walls of the conservatory. "We wait for Ruiz to arrest me? We wait for your precious wife to testify and send me to prison for twenty years while she inherits everything? I did this for us! I pushed her for us!"
Hidden amongst the lush, tropical foliage of the conservatory, another micro-camera captured the entire explosive argument. It captured the exact moment Vanessa confessed, in screaming, undeniable detail, to the premeditated push.
Ruiz watched the feed, a dark smile spreading across his face. He quickly clipped the video file, encrypting it and sending a backup to his secure personal server. They were completely unraveling. The paranoia, the fear, and the sheer pressure of their own guilt were tearing them apart from the inside out.

He picked up his phone and called Elena. "Chapter six is complete," he told her. "We have the verbal confession on tape. She practically screamed it from the rooftops. And Richard explicitly acknowledged it. They are both hopelessly nailed."
"Perfect," Elena replied, her voice cold and sharp. "Tomorrow is the gala. Let them get dressed up. Let them put on their diamonds and their fake smiles. And when the room is full of the city's elite... we bring down the curtain."
