Chapter 5: Rosa’s Quiet Strength

Rosa had been working for the Duarte family for almost two years.

She had arrived after Señora Duarte passed away. The house had been cold and quiet back then. The girls had cried every night. Emiliano had buried himself in work.

Rosa had stayed late many nights, singing softly to the girls until they fell asleep. She had learned their favorite stories, their fears, their small joys.

She knew Patricia hated her.

She also knew Patricia was cruel to the girls when no one was watching.

But Rosa stayed anyway.

Because someone had to protect Sofia and Martina.

That night, after putting the girls to bed, Rosa was cleaning the kitchen when Emiliano walked in.

“Rosa,” he said. “Can we talk?”

She wiped her hands on her apron and nodded.

Emiliano looked tired. Older than she remembered.

“I want to thank you,” he said quietly. “For taking care of my daughters.”

Rosa lowered her eyes. “It is my job, señor.”

“No,” Emiliano said. “It’s more than that. And I think… I think I’ve been blind.”

Rosa didn’t answer. She simply nodded once and continued wiping the counter.

But for the first time in months, she felt a small flicker of hope.

Maybe things would finally change.
