Chapter 10: The Apology
That evening, Emiliano asked Rosa to meet him in the living room after the girls went to sleep.
He stood up when she entered.
“Rosa,” he said. “I owe you an apology. A real one.”
Rosa looked surprised.
“You protected my daughters when I couldn’t see what was happening,” he continued. “I almost fired you because of lies. I almost married a woman who was hurting them. I’m sorry. Deeply sorry.”
Rosa was quiet for a moment.
Then she said softly, “You saw the truth in time, señor. That is what matters.”
Emiliano shook his head.
“No. I should have seen it sooner. I should have trusted my own eyes instead of listening to poison.”
He looked at her — really looked at her.
“You’ve been more of a mother to them than anyone since my wife died. I won’t forget that.”
Rosa’s eyes glistened, but she didn’t cry.
