Chapter 9 - The Senator's Fall

-9-
The morning sun broke through the heavy gray clouds over New York Harbor, casting a cold, metallic sheen across the concrete docks of Brooklyn Pier 42. It was 8:00 AM, and the emergency session of the Senate Committee on Interstate Commerce was scheduled to begin inside a secure federal hearing room downtown.
Inside the back of a bulletproof black Mercedes SUV idling across the street from the federal courthouse, Harper sat in silence, watching the steady stream of high-priced lawyers, lobbyists, and journalists pouring through the massive stone entrance.
Damian sat beside her, going over a dense digital dossier on his tablet, his expression completely unreadable.
"Are you sure this is going to work?" Harper asked, breaking the silence as she clutched her coat tightly around her. "Julian knows we caught his operative last night. If he suspects we're walking into an ambush—"
"Julian doesn't suspect an ambush," Damian interrupted, not looking up from his screen. "He thinks he won. He believes the data his operative downloaded last night gave him the exact shipping manifests of our unregistered cargo vessels. He’s planning to present those forged manifests to the Senate committee this morning to trigger an immediate federal asset seizure of my entire portfolio."
Harper frowned, looking at him sideways. "And you let him steal those files on purpose?"
A faint, dangerous smile touched the corners of Damian’s mouth. "When you want to trap a wolf, Harper, you don't chase him through the woods. You leave a poisoned piece of meat right in the center of his den."
Ten minutes later, Damian and Harper stepped out of the vehicle and walked up the grand stone steps of the federal courthouse. Cameras flashed blindingly around them, reporters shouting questions about their rumored engagement, the Waldorf Astoria incident, and the sudden federal investigation into Damian’s shipping empire.
They walked through the heavy oak doors into the packed, vaulted hearing room.
Senator Thomas Vance sat at the center of the elevated mahogany dais, his silver hair catching the courtroom lights, looking every bit the righteous statesman. Seated directly beside him at the prosecution table was Julian Vance, wearing an immaculate gray suit and an expression of supreme, unshakeable confidence.
As Damian and Harper took their seats across the aisle, Julian leaned over his microphone, flashing a triumphant grin.
"Mr. Croft," Senator Vance began, his voice booming through the auditorium's sound system with theatrical solemnity. "This committee has received substantial, classified evidence indicating massive commercial fraud, illegal arms trafficking, and tax evasion originating from your private shipping terminals in Brooklyn. How do you plead to these allegations?"
A hush fell over the entire courtroom. Journalists leaned forward, pens poised over notepads.
Damian didn't flinch. He slowly stood up, buttoning his suit jacket with absolute calm.
"I plead entirely innocent, Senator Vance," Damian’s voice echoed smoothly across the room. "In fact, we welcome this investigation. Because it gives us an unprecedented opportunity to examine the financial records of every individual sitting on this committee—starting with your own nephew, Julian Vance."
Julian’s triumphant smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "Objection! This hearing is about Mr. Croft's illicit shipping terminals, not my personal finances!"
"Overruled," a sharp, authoritative voice rang out from the back of the gallery.
The heavy doors at the back of the courtroom swung open. Federal marshals marched down the central aisle, led by a senior investigator from the Department of Justice carrying a stack of thick red files.
"Special Agent Vance, DOJ," the lead investigator announced, stepping up to the dais and placing the files directly in front of Senator Vance. "We have intercepted unauthorized financial wire transfers routed from offshore shell corporations in the Cayman Islands directly into Julian Vance’s personal accounts—funded by the exact same rival cartel faction currently attempting a hostile takeover of the Brooklyn waterfront."
The color drained entirely from Senator Vance’s face. He looked down at the red files, his hands trembling violently against the mahogany desk.
Julian leaped to his feet, his face twisting in blind panic. "This is a fabrication! Damian planted those files! He's framing us!"

Damian turned slowly, looking directly at Julian with a gaze so cold it made the younger man step back in terror.
"You shouldn't have sent your men into my house, Julian," Damian said softly, his voice carrying clearly across the silent courtroom. "Some things are simply not meant to be stolen."
