Chapter 8 - A Bullet in the Dark

-8-

The cold black barrel of the suppressed pistol aimed straight at Harper’s chest, held by a man whose eyes held the dead, flat expression of a professional killer.

"Don't move a muscle, Miss Quinn," the operative hissed, his voice dropping to a venomous whisper as he advanced toward her. "Julian sends his regards. He always hated messy loose ends."

Harper’s survival instincts took over. As the man lunged forward to grab her arm, she didn't scream; instead, she grabbed a heavy, bronze antique paperweight from the side table and hurled it directly at his face with all her remaining strength.

The heavy metal struck the intruder squarely across the bridge of his nose with a sickening crunch. He staggered backward, cursing in agony as blood gushed from his nose, his grip on the pistol faltering for a fraction of a second.

Harper didn't wait to see if he recovered. She bolted down the dark hallway toward the grand foyer, her bare feet pounding frantically against the marble floor.

Behind her, she heard the harsh, metallic click of the pistol slide resetting.

Bang.

The bullet shattered a crystal vase beside her head, showering her with glittering shards of glass as the shockwave of the blast roared through the corridor. She threw herself around the corner toward the security control room, slamming her hand against the emergency biometric scanner on the wall.

"Damn it!" Harper cursed aloud.

Footsteps pounded rapidly down the marble floor behind her. The operative was closing in, his breathing ragged and furious.

Suddenly, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion blasted inward with a deafening crash of splintering wood.

Before the intruder could raise his gun to fire another shot, two dark silhouettes materialized from the shadows of the foyer. In a flash of blinding motion, Damian Croft crossed the room, tackling the operative to the ground with brutal, calculated force.

The pistol flew across the marble floor. Damian drove his fist downward once, twice, with terrifying, controlled fury, until the intruder went completely limp beneath him.

The entire hallway fell into a breathless, terrifying silence, broken only by the sound of Harper’s ragged breathing as she leaned against the wall, shaking uncontrollably.

Damian stood up slowly, wiping a smear of blood from his knuckles. He turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto Harper. His face was carved from absolute granite, devoid of shock, but filled with a simmering, lethal rage.

"What in God's name were you doing downstairs at three-thirty in the morning, Harper?" Damian demanded, his voice a low, terrifying growl.

Harper pushed herself off the wall, her fear instantly hardening back into defiance. "I heard someone moving around! I came down to investigate, and I caught Julian’s man downloading your secure files!"

Damian stared at her for a long, agonizing moment, then walked past her into the study. He knelt beside the unconscious operative, pulled a small encrypted flash drive from the man's pocket, and checked his computer screen.

When he stood back up, his expression had darkened into something far more dangerous than anger.

"He didn't just download files, Harper," Damian said quietly, turning to face her. "He just triggered a remote diagnostic beacon. Julian and his faction now know every security protocol protecting this estate."

"Then we have to leave," Harper said urgently, stepping forward. "We have to get Lily out of here tonight before they target her!"

Damian walked slowly toward her, stopping just inches away. He reached out, his hand gently grasping her trembling shoulder, anchoring her in place.

"We aren't running, Harper," Damian said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "The trap is set. And tomorrow, we burn Julian Vance’s empire to the ground."
