Chapter 13 - The Ghost of Brooklyn

-13-

Three weeks passed in a blur of secluded luxury and escalating intimacy. The mansion on the Upper East Side had transformed from a cold fortress into a strange, complicated home. Harper had settled into a rhythm with Damian—sharing quiet dinners in the private conservatory, reviewing shipping logistics dossiers together by the fireplace, and visiting Lily at the specialized neurological clinic in Manhattan where her physical therapy was yielding miraculous results.

Lily was walking unassisted for short distances now, her laughter returning to normal, entirely unaware of the syndicate wars, the Sicilian death threats, and the high-stakes contract her sister had signed to keep her alive.

Yet, peace in Damian Croft’s world was never permanent.

It was a freezing Tuesday afternoon when the encrypted secure phone on Damian’s executive desk began to flash a pulsing crimson light—a priority-one emergency alert reserved exclusively for internal security breaches.

Harper was sitting across the room sketching architectural designs on a digital tablet when she noticed Damian freeze mid-sentence. His dark eyes locked onto the flashing red screen, his expression turning to absolute ice.

"What is it?" Harper asked, standing up immediately.

"A containment breach," Damian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register as he grabbed his suit jacket. "The federal detention center upstate where Julian Vance was being held... it was attacked three hours ago."

Harper’s breath caught in her throat. "Attacked? By whom?"

"Not by a rival cartel," Damian said, pulling his leather gloves on with sharp, precise movements. "By a ghost. Someone who hasn't been seen on the Eastern Seaboard in over five years."

"Who?"

"Marcus Vance," Damian said, his jaw tightening into a hard line. "Julian’s older brother—and the former enforcer of the original Rinaldi syndicate before I dismantled their core infrastructure. He was supposed to be rotting in a maximum-security federal black site in Colorado."

Harper felt a cold chill wash over her spine. "If Marcus is out... and he blames us for Julian’s arrest and his family's ruin..."

"He won't come after me directly," Damian interrupted, walking toward the heavy oak door of the study. "Men like Marcus don't attack the apex predator head-on. They go after the one thing the predator is trying to protect."

Realization struck Harper like a physical blow. Her face went completely pale.

"Lily," she gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "He’s going after Lily at the clinic!"

Damian didn't hesitate. He drew his concealed pistol, checked the magazine with a practiced click, and handed a secondary encrypted satellite tracker to Harper.

"Get into the panic room in the basement," Damian commanded, his voice brooking no argument. "Lock the heavy steel door, and do not open it for anyone—not even my voice—unless I give you the specific passcode we agreed upon."

"No!" Harper yelled, grabbing his arm. "I'm not hiding while my sister is in danger! I'm coming with you!"

Damian looked down at her grip on his arm, his dark eyes softening for a fraction of a second before hardening back into absolute steel. He gently pulled her hand away, cupping her face in his palm.

"Listen to me, Harper," he whispered fiercely. "I spent my entire life building walls to keep people out. You are the first person I ever let inside. I will burn every dock, every ship, and every building in this city to ash before I let anyone touch you or your sister. Stay in this house."

Before Harper could argue further, Damian turned on his heel, bolted out of the study, and slammed the heavy front doors behind him, leaving her alone in the silent, echoing mansion as the storm gathered outside.
