Chapter 7 - The Ledger of Secrets

-7-

The digital clock on the bedside table read 3:14 AM. Harper lay wide awake beneath the heavy down duvet of her magnificent guest suite, her mind refusing to quiet down. Damian’s words from the car echoed endlessly in her head. “Julian Vance is the primary leak... feeding our maritime shipping routes to a rival cartel faction.”

She couldn't shake the unsettling feeling that she was walking through a minefield blindfolded. If Damian was fighting a hidden war against a rival faction, and if Julian Vance was leaking internal syndicate data, then everyone in that Manhattan townhouse was playing a dangerous, multi-layered game of betrayal—and she was right in the middle of it.

Quietly, Harper slipped out of bed, pulling a silk robe over her camisole. Her bare feet made no sound against the thick Persian rug as she opened her bedroom door and stepped out into the dimly lit hallway of the second-floor eastern wing.

Her destination wasn't her room. It was Damian’s private study on the ground floor.

During the afternoon briefing, she had noticed Damian sliding a thin, encrypted flash drive into the base of his executive desk lockbox—the same flash drive Julian Vance had been glancing at so hungrily during the senator's dinner party. If Julian was looking for data to leak, that drive contained the exact coordinates of the rival syndicate's financial accounts.

Harper crept down the grand staircase, holding her breath as every floorboard threatened to betray her. The ground floor was pitch black, illuminated only by the faint silver moonlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling conservatory windows.

She reached the heavy mahogany door of Damian’s study. To her absolute shock, the door wasn't locked. It was pushed open by a fraction of an inch, casting a thin, pale sliver of light across the dark parquet floor.

Harper froze. Someone was already inside.

Pressing her back against the cool wall beside the frame, she peered cautiously into the room.

Standing beside the mahogany desk wasn't Damian. It was a man in a dark maintenance uniform, his back turned to the door as he rapidly typed commands into Damian’s open desktop computer while simultaneously downloading files onto a small encrypted drive.

Harper’s heart slammed against her ribs. It wasn't Julian Vance in the room—it was his personal assistant, the quiet, unassuming man who had stood behind Julian all evening at the senator's home.

Before Harper could slip away to alert security, her heel brushed against a stray decorative umbrella stand near the door, sending it crashing to the parquet floor with a deafening clatter.

The man inside spun around instantly, a suppressed pistol gleaming darkly in his hand.

"Well, well," the intruder sneered, his eyes locking onto Harper as he stepped out from behind the desk, blocking her only exit. "It looks like the boss’s expensive new pet likes to play detective."
