Chapter 11 - The Sicilian Envoys

-11-

The heavy oak doors of the grand dining room were locked from the inside, sealing off the sprawling estate from the rest of the world. Two federal-grade surveillance monitors mounted near the ceiling flickered with live infrared feeds of the perimeter gates, where a pair of black Mercedes-Maybach sedans bearing diplomatic plates sat idling in the freezing drizzle.

Inside the dining room, the long mahogany table—usually reserved for state dinners and syndicate summits—was covered not with crystal and silver, but with encrypted laptops, satellite phones, and thick, wax-sealed manila dossiers written in Italian.

Damian stood at the head of the table, his shirtsleeves rolled up, his face carved from cold stone. Across from him sat two men sent directly from Palermo: Don Vincenzo Moretti, an elderly patriarch with silver hair swept straight back and eyes like chipped flint, accompanied by his massive, silent bodyguard, a man known only as Brutus.

"You have grown bold, Damian," Don Moretti spoke in heavily accented English, his voice like grinding stones. "You dismantle Julian Vance, you shatter the Boston faction, and you act as though the Eastern Seaboard belongs entirely to your personal dynasty. But you forget who carved out these shipping lanes before your father even learned how to launder a dollar."

Harper stood quietly in the darkened corner near the conservatory archway, observing the tension in the room. She was no longer the frightened girl from Brooklyn; she had learned to read the subtle language of predators. She watched Damian’s fingers rest calmly against the edge of the mahogany table, showing no sign of intimidation.

"The old ways are dying, Vincenzo," Damian replied, his voice smooth and lethally calm. "The families in Palermo can no longer protect our maritime interests against federal cyber-surveillance and Interpol task forces. If we don't modernize our logistics, we drown in our own archaic traditions."

Don Moretti slammed his wrinkled palm against the table, the wax seals rattling against the wood. "Modernization is just a polite word for treason! You think because you parade a civilian woman around Manhattan as your fiancée that you have somehow become legitimate? You are a creature of the dark, Damian. And the syndicate decides when your reign ends."

The temperature in the room plummeted. Brutus, the massive bodyguard behind the patriarch, slowly slid his hand inside his tailored jacket, his fingers wrapping around the grip of a hidden firearm.

Before Brutus could even clear his holster, Damian’s hand moved with blinding, terrifying speed.

Bang.

A suppressed gunshot echoed through the vaulted dining room. A single hole appeared in the mahogany table precisely one inch from Don Moretti’s ring finger, sending splinters flying across the polished wood.

Brutus froze, his weapon trapped halfway out of his jacket as a laser dot from a sniper rifle positioned outside the conservatory window locked directly onto the center of his forehead.

Damian slowly lowered his own concealed pistol, his dark eyes fixed on the Sicilian patriarch with absolute, chilling authority.

"Never reach for a weapon in my home again," Damian whispered, the words carrying the weight of an executioner. "And never speak of Miss Quinn as a civilian pawn. She is my equal. Cross her, and Palermo won't even find your bones."

Don Moretti swallowed hard, his skin turning the color of curdled milk as he stared at the smoking bullet hole beside his hand. He realized with terrifying clarity that Damian Croft was no longer just a regional cartel boss—he was an untouchable sovereign.

"We... we will discuss the logistics agreement on your terms," Moretti choked out, his voice trembling for the first time.

"Good," Damian said, sliding his pistol back into his shoulder holster. "The meeting is over. Get out of my house before I change my mind."
