Chapter 6 - The Midnight Confession

-6-

The ride back to the Upper East Side mansion was drowned in a suffocating silence. The partition between the driver’s compartment and the back of the stretch town car was fully raised, locking Harper and Damian in a private capsule of dim lighting and escalating tension.

Harper stared out the tinted window as the blurred neon lights of Manhattan streaked past in a kaleidoscope of red and white. Her mind was racing, replaying Julian Vance’s toxic warning over and over again: “Damian doesn't protect people, Harper. He consumes them.”

"You shouldn't have threatened Julian," Harper finally broke the silence, her voice cold and level without turning her head. "He was merely stating an obvious truth."

Damian sat in the opposite corner of the plush leather seat, his jacket unbuttoned, his tie slightly loosened. He stared at her with an unreadable expression. "Julian Vance is a parasitic gambler who lost three million dollars of syndicate capital on underground poker matches last month. If I hadn't intervened, he would have sold your background to the tabloids before midnight just to buy himself another week at the poker table."

"And what about what he said?" Harper turned her head slowly, meeting Damian’s dark gaze head-on. "Is it true? Are you keeping me here as a hostage disguised as a fiancée?"

"Do you feel like a hostage?" Damian asked quietly, his voice dropping into a register that felt far too intimate for comfort.

"I feel like a pawn in a war I never signed up for," Harper snapped, the artificial composure she had worn all evening finally cracking under the weight of exhaustion and fear. "You use me to project power at senator dinners, you threaten men who look at me sideways, and you treat my entire life like a chess piece in your corporate empire! When does it stop, Damian? When do I get to wake up and know my sister is safe without having to sell my soul to a monster?"

In a single, lightning-fast motion, Damian crossed the space between them. Before Harper could flinch, his hand caught her chin, tilting her face upward. His fingers were warm, contrasting sharply with the terrifying coldness in his eyes.

"Listen to me, Harper," Damian whispered, his face inches from hers. "You think I'm a monster because I operate in the shadows. But you don't know what shadows I'm keeping away from your door. Julian Vance isn't just a gambler; he's the primary leak inside the Senate committee feeding our maritime shipping routes to a rival cartel faction operating out of Boston. Every move I make, every alliance I forge, and every public appearance we orchestrate together is designed to draw them out into the open."

Harper stared into his eyes, her breath catching in her throat. She saw no deception there—only a burning, exhausting fury that mirrored her own survival instinct.

"Why tell me this?" she whispered. "Why risk trusting me?"

"Because," Damian said slowly, his thumb brushing lightly across her lower lip before he pulled his hand away, "you are the only person in my entire world who isn't afraid of me. The only person who looked me in the eye and chose violence over submission."

He leaned back into his corner of the seat as the car smoothly glided through the iron gates of the mansion and came to a halt.

"Go inside and rest, Harper," Damian said softly as the chauffeur opened the door. "Tomorrow, the real game begins."
