Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Senator's Study

-5-

The townhouse of Senator Thomas Vance in Georgetown—though he maintained an equally lavish residence in Manhattan’s Sutton Place—was a fortress of old-money pretension and modern political corruption. Chandeliers of Czech crystal cast a warm, golden glow over rooms packed with state legislators, federal judges, and corporate executives whose names regularly graced the front pages of the Wall Street Journal.

When Damian Croft and Harper Quinn entered the grand salon, the ambient hum of conversation dropped by several decibels.

All eyes gravitated toward them like iron filings to a magnet. But it wasn't Damian’s formidable reputation that drew their gaze—it was Harper. Word of the Waldorf Astoria incident had rippled through the upper echelons of New York society with the speed of a wildfire. The mystery woman who had slapped the most feared venture capitalist on the Eastern Seaboard wasn't hiding in shame; she was walking beside him draped in emerald silk, her chin held high and her expression utterly unbothered.

Senator Vance, a tall, silver-haired man with patrician features and a politician's practiced, dazzling smile, pushed through the crowd to intercept them.

"Damian, my boy!" Senator Vance boomed, clapping Damian on the shoulder before turning his sharp, appraising eyes toward Harper. "And this must be the infamous Miss Quinn. Rumor has it you pack quite a punch."

Harper didn't blink. She extended her hand with cool poise, remembering her coaching. "Only for men who mistake arrogance for power, Senator. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you."

A murmur of appreciative laughter rippled through the surrounding associates. Vance’s smile tightened slightly at the edges, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his eyes before he threw his head back and laughed heartily.

"Fierce! I like her, Damian! You always did have a taste for high-risk investments," Vance chuckled, before leaning in slightly closer. "Actually, Damian, while you're circulating, I need a brief word with you in my private study regarding the Port Authority zoning permits. A few... technical adjustments require your personal sign-off."

Damian glanced down at Harper, his expression darkening with a subtle, protective warning. "I won't be long, my love. Help yourself to champagne."

"Go ahead," Harper murmured, offering a sweet, flawless smile. "I can take care of myself."

As Damian and the senator vanished down a paneled hallway toward the back of the townhouse, Harper slipped away from the main cluster of guests, taking refuge near a quiet balcony overlooking a frost-covered courtyard. Her heart was beating a frantic rhythm against her ribs; maintaining the facade of a cold, confident socialite was exhausting work.

"You play the part remarkably well for a girl who was serving canapés three nights ago."

Harper spun around. Leaning against the velvet drapery near the French doors was a man she hadn't noticed before—younger than Damian, with sharp, sandy blonde hair, ice-blue eyes, and an expensive tailored suit that looked slightly rumpled. He was swirling a glass of amber bourbon, watching her with an amused, predatory glint.

"Excuse me?" Harper said coldly, keeping her distance.

"Don't play innocent with me, Miss Quinn," the man laughed softly, stepping closer. "I’m Julian Vance, the senator’s prodigal nephew and executive vice president of Vance Global Logistics. My uncle thinks Damian is invincible. But I know better. And I know a captive bird when I see one."

Harper’s eyes narrowed. "I am nobody’s captive, Mr. Vance."

"Are you?" Julian whispered, leaning in close enough for Harper to catch the scent of bourbon and expensive cologne. "Because Damian Croft doesn't take fiancées. He takes hostages. And if you think playing house with a cartel boss is going to save your sister’s medical bills, you're more naive than you look. Damian doesn't protect people, Harper. He consumes them."

Before Harper could retort, a cold, lethal voice cut through the space between them like a razor blade.

"Keep your hands to yourself, Julian, unless you want the other hand broken."

Damian stood at the edge of the alcove, his face carved from ice, his dark eyes fixed on Julian with a murderous intensity that made the younger man immediately step back and raise his hands in mock surrender.
