Chapter 9 - Dawn Over the Blackwood Estate

-9-
The first rays of golden autumn sunlight broke over the eastern foothills of Chicago, casting a warm, brilliant glow across the manicured lawns and shattered windows of the Blackwood Mansion. The emergency sirens and tactical units that Dante had threatened never arrived; Victor’s counter-intelligence grid had successfully jammed all outgoing transmissions from the estate before any outside authorities could respond to the brief skirmish in the west wing.
Inside the nursery, the air smelled of fresh lavender and clean cotton. Little Ethan was awake now, sitting propped up in his newly cushioned rocking chair, cooing happily as he shook a wooden rattle with his good hand while his other arm rested comfortably in its lightweight, custom-fitted orthopedic cast.
I stood by the window, watching the sunrise paint the sky in shades of amber and rose, holding a cup of hot chamomile tea. My hands were still wrapped in clean white bandages, but the dull ache in my ribs had faded into a manageable stiffness. The nightmare of the previous night felt both a lifetime away and terrifyingly fresh in my mind. Down in the subterranean vault, Serena and Dante were learning the true cost of betraying the most feared man in Chicago, facing a lifetime of isolation in a world Victor controlled.
The door opened softly, and Victor stepped into the nursery. He had changed into a fresh charcoal suit, his hair neatly combed, looking every bit the untouchable syndicate boss he was—yet the rigid, lethal tension that had defined him yesterday was entirely gone, replaced by a quiet, grounding peace.
He walked over to the rocking chair, kneeling down beside Ethan and gently tickling the baby’s toes. Ethan let out a bright, bubbling giggle that melted the cold walls of the room instantly.
“Dr. Arispe checked the security feeds and the medical logs an hour ago,” Victor said, looking up from his son to meet my eyes across the room. “The tracking script has been completely scrubbed from the national database, and Arthur Montigue’s banking assets have been formally frozen by the federal banking commission under our preliminary litigation injunction. They won’t be bothering us ever again.”
“And Serena?” I asked quietly, turning away from the window.
“She and Dante are being transferred this morning to an undisclosed holding facility in South America,” Victor replied flatly, his voice devoid of emotion. “They will live out their days in comfortable obscurity, completely cut off from civilization, never to set foot in Chicago again.”
He stood up slowly, walking across the hardwood floor until he stopped just a foot away from me. The warmth radiating from him was undeniable.
“You didn't answer my question from last night, Lily,” Victor said softly, his dark eyes searching mine with an intensity that made my heart race. “About staying.”
I looked down at Ethan, who was now happily chewing on his wooden rattle, completely safe, completely loved, and surrounded by a fortress of absolute protection. Then I looked back up at Victor—the mafia boss who had torn down an empire to avenge a broken arm, and who had looked at me not as an employee, but as an equal partner in survival.
“I’m not going anywhere,” I whispered, a small, genuine smile forming on my lips.
May you like
Victor’s face softened into a rare, breathtaking smile that reached all the way to his eyes. He reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind my ear, his fingers brushing softly against my cheek.
“Good,” he murmured. “Because my son needs his mother, and I... I need you.”
