Chapter 8 - The Secret in the Medical File

-8-

The smoke in the west wing slowly cleared as the estate's ventilation system kicked into auxiliary scrubbers, replacing the acrid smell of gunpowder with the sterile hum of filtered air. Marcus and another loyal guard dragged the groaning, bleeding Dante down toward the basement vault, leaving Victor and me standing alone in the quiet corridor.

I let out a long, shuddering breath, my knees finally feeling weak as the immediate adrenaline rush began to fade. Ethan shifted in my arms, giving a soft, sleepy yawn before settling back into his peaceful slumber, entirely oblivious to the miniature war zone that had just raged around him.

Victor turned around, his dark eyes scanning me quickly from head to toe to ensure I wasn't injured. He reached out, gently supporting my elbow as my legs wobbled slightly.

“Are you hurt?” Victor asked, his voice losing its cold, syndicate edge and softening into genuine, deep concern.

“I’m... I’m okay,” I whispered, looking up at him. “Just shaken. But Dante mentioned something before you stopped him... a tracker in Ethan’s medical file. What did he mean?”

Victor’s jaw tightened, a dark shadow passing across his face. He gestured for me to follow him back into the ruined medical suite, where we sat down away from the shattered glass and debris. Victor pulled his laptop from a secure wall compartment, plugging in a encrypted flash drive.

“Serena wasn't just a socialite playing house,” Victor explained grimly as lines of code scrolled across the screen. “Her father, Arthur Montigue, has been working with federal intelligence agencies for years as an informant, trading low-level syndicate secrets to buy immunity for his own financial crimes. Serena was supposed to be his inside ear in my mansion.”

He clicked open a sub-folder labeled Ethan_Medical_Registry_Encrypted.

“When Ethan was born through the surrogate program, Serena insisted on handling his primary pediatric registry herself,” Victor continued, tapping the screen to reveal a hidden GPS tracking script embedded deep within the child’s vaccination and allergy profile. “She didn't just want to abuse him; she was tracking his biometric data, his exact location within the estate, and transmitting it to a federal strike team scheduled to raid the mansion at the end of the month.”

My breath caught in my throat. “A federal raid? To arrest you?”

“To take Ethan,” Victor corrected sharply, his eyes burning with lethal intensity. “Under federal custody orders manipulated by Arthur Montigue, they were going to claim I was an unfit father due to ‘syndicate exposure,’ seize custody of my son, and hand him over to Serena and her family as part of a secret guardianship settlement.”

The sheer, diabolical scale of the betrayal made my stomach turn. Serena hadn't just been a cruel fiancée; she had been a sleeper agent planted in our lives to steal Victor’s son and destroy everything he loved.

“And now?” I asked quietly, looking down at sleeping Ethan. “Now that Dante and Serena are locked in the vault, and Arthur’s empire is collapsing... what happens next?”

Victor turned away from the laptop, looking directly at me with an expression so profound and steady it took my breath away. He reached across the table, gently placing his large, warm hand over my bandaged fingers.

“Now,” Victor said softly, “we rewrite the file. We purge the tracking scripts, cut all federal ties, and secure a new birth and custody registry under absolute diplomatic immunity through my foreign contacts in Zurich.”

He paused, his thumb gently stroking the back of my hand.

“And as for you, Lily... you’ve proven that you are the only person in this city I can truly trust with my son’s life. I need to know: will you stay? Not just as his nanny, but as part of this family, under my absolute protection, for as long as it takes?”
