Chapter 11 - The Stranger at the Gate

My finger froze on the intercom button. The terminal screen flickered, displaying the stranger’s vital statistics and an automated facial recognition prompt that flashed red across the interface: Warning - Identity Unverified - Restricted Security Tier.
“Who are you?” I demanded into the microphone, my heart hammering against my ribs as the stranger’s warning echoed ominously through the silent library. “What do you mean about Ethan?”
“I don’t have time to explain through a gate speaker!” the woman cried out, stepping closer to the camera lens as thunder rumbled in the distance, lightning illuminating the stark terror on her face. “Dante Vance wasn't working alone! There’s a higher council—the Syndicate Directorate—and they’ve already marked this house for total extermination. If Victor doesn't let me in, we’re all dead by midnight!”
Before I could press the button to unlock the service gates, a loud, metallic screech echoed from the front courtyard. Through the library window, I saw three black unmarked SUVs plow directly through the estate’s outer security perimeter, smashing the heavy iron gates off their hinges and surging up the gravel driveway with their headlights blazing through the rain.
“Intruders!” Marcus’s voice crackled instantly through my tactical earpiece. “Code Red! Defensive positions—they breached the outer gate!”
Panic surged through my veins. I grabbed the encrypted desk phone, slamming the speed-dial button for Victor’s private satellite line. It rang twice before Victor’s deep, urgent voice answered.
“Lily! Report. Marcus says the alarms just tripped.”
“Victor, someone just broke through the gates!” I shouted over the rising wind and the distant roar of engines outside. “A woman... she was at the intercom saying the surrogate files were a lie, that Ethan isn’t safe, and now multiple SUVs are swarming the courtyard!”
There was a dead, terrifying silence on the other end of the line for two agonizing seconds. When Victor spoke, his voice was no longer that of a calm protector; it was the cold, lethal voice of an apex predator unleashed.
“Lock down the panic room. Do not open the doors for anyone—not even me, unless I give you the specific passcode. I am five minutes out. Hold that house, Lily. I’m coming home.”
The line went dead.
I didn’t hesitate. I dropped the phone, bolted out of the library, and sprinted up the grand staircase toward the nursery. My lungs burned as I threw open the nursery door. Ethan was awake, startled by the distant commotion, letting out a soft whimper in his crib. I scooped him up into my arms, wrapping a warm blanket around him, and rushed toward the secret hydraulic panel hidden behind the walk-in closet.

I punched the six-digit override code Victor had given me. The wood-paneled wall hissed open, revealing the brightly lit steel elevator leading down to the underground bunker.
As I stepped inside and the heavy steel door began to slide shut, the front doors of the mansion downstairs exploded inward with a deafening crash of splintering wood and gunfire.
