Chapter 13 - The Breach of the Vault

The red warning light on the console pulsed rhythmically, casting an eerie, warning glow across the steel walls of the underground bunker. On the main security monitor, the camera feed in the sub-level airlock corridor flickered. A heavy thermal cutting torch was hissing against the thick steel plate of the bunker’s secondary access door, sending showers of bright orange sparks cascading across the concrete floor.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I clutched Ethan tightly to my chest, his little hands gripping the collar of my shirt as he sensed my rising panic and let out a soft, frightened whimper.
“Shh, baby, it’s okay,” I whispered, backing away from the monitoring console toward the emergency exit tunnel that led out into the forest trail behind the estate.
I reached for the manual release lever of the tunnel door, but as I pulled down with all my weight, the metal arm didn't budge. A digital keypad flashed red above the handle: System Locked - Biometric Override Required. Julian Vance’s syndicate operatives had hacked the exterior security grid from upstairs, locking down every single exit from the outside.
We were trapped.
On the central monitor, the thermal cutting torch suddenly punched a jagged hole through the center of the airlock door. A heavy black combat boot kicked the remaining steel inward with a deafening crash, and two elite mercenaries poured into the sub-level corridor, their assault rifles raised, scanning the shadows for targets.
Trailing closely behind them was Julian Vance, stepping over the smoking debris of the door with unhurried, terrifying confidence. He holstered his silenced pistol, pulling a leather-bound manila folder from inside his coat—the very file Elena had died trying to protect.
“You can run, little nanny, but you can’t hide in a concrete box,” Julian’s cold, echoing voice drifted through the bunker’s audio speakers, directed straight at the hidden security mic. “Open the inner vault door, or we pump toxic neurotoxin through the ventilation grates. You have thirty seconds.”
My mind raced. Thirty seconds. Victor was five minutes out when he called, which meant he had less than two minutes left before he reached the estate. But if I opened the door now, Julian would execute us both before Victor even crossed the threshold. If I didn't open it, the neurotoxin would fill the room, and Ethan would die in my arms.
Click.
A secondary red light flashed on the console. A secure audio channel blinked on the bottom corner of the screen. It wasn't Julian. It was an encrypted, direct satellite relay from Victor’s car.
“Lily,” Victor’s voice came through the comms, cold, controlled, and deadlier than anything I had ever heard. “I’m in the courtyard. I see their extraction vehicles. Do not open the door.”

“Victor, they have the airlock! They’re threatening to use gas, and they have a file—they said Ethan isn't a Blackwood surrogate child—” I stammered into the console mic, tears blurring my vision.
“Let them talk,” Victor replied calmly, the sound of screeching tires and heavy artillery fire echoing faintly in the background of his transmission. “Because the moment they breach that inner door, they’re stepping into my domain. Hold on for twenty more seconds, Lily. I’m coming home.”
