Chapter 4 - The Collapsing Empire

Back in the medical suite, the digital clock on the wall glowed 3:15 AM. Ethan was sleeping soundly, his little arm cradled in a lightweight orthopedic cast, his breathing steady and peaceful. I sat in the armchair beside his bassinet, gently stroking his soft brown hair, still processing the surreal whirlwind of violence, betrayal, and dark justice that had unfolded beneath this roof over the last few hours.
The heavy oak door clicked open, and Victor walked in. He had finally removed his damp coat, revealing a crisp black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, exposing the dark, intricate tattoos that wrapped around his forearms—symbols of the syndicate underworld that most people only ever saw in nightmares. He looked tired, the hard lines around his eyes etched with deep exhaustion, but the terrifying aura of lethal control remained entirely intact.
“How is he?” Victor asked quietly, stopping at the edge of the bassinet and looking down at his son with an expression so fiercely tender it completely transformed his stern face.
“He’s resting well,” I answered softly, standing up to give him space. “The sedative is keeping the pain away. Dr. Arispe said he’ll be fine by morning, as long as we keep him calm.”
Victor nodded, gently placing a large, warm palm against Ethan’s cheek for a brief second before pulling away and turning his attention toward me. He walked over to the small table where the nurse had left a fresh tray of medical supplies and water.
“Your hands,” Victor noted, gesturing toward my bandaged palms. “And your stomach. Let Dr. Arispe examine you before you leave.”
“I’m fine, Mr. Blackwood—Victor,” I corrected myself quickly, flushing slightly under his intense gaze. “It’s just bruising. Nothing compared to what Ethan went through.”
Victor walked closer, stopping just a few feet away. The sheer presence of him filled the room, making my breath hitch in my throat. “You saved my son’s life,” he repeated, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a weight that demanded absolute attention. “Not just tonight, but every single day you stayed in this house while Serena abused him behind my back. You protected him when nobody else would. In my world, Lily, loyalty like that is rarer than gold, and betrayal is punished by fire.”
“I didn't do it for a reward,” I said quietly, looking down at my shoes. “I did it because I love him.”
“I know,” Victor replied softly. A strange, unfamiliar warmth flickered in his dark eyes. “Which is why things are going to change around here. Serena and her father are no longer a factor. Arthur Montigue’s banking empire is currently being dismantled asset by asset by my legal team as compensation for the medical and psychological damages inflicted upon my household. By sunrise, the Montigue name will be nothing more than a footnote in Chicago history.”
My eyes widened. “You’re destroying their entire family?”
“They built their fortune on stolen loans, insider trading, and political bribery,” Victor said flatly, his voice devoid of remorse. “I merely accelerated their bankruptcy. Nobody hurts my blood and walks away with a legacy.”
Before I could process the sheer, terrifying magnitude of his power, a sharp knock echoed at the door of the medical suite. Marcus pushed his way into the room, his expression unusually tense, holding a secure satellite phone in his gloved hand.
“Boss,” Marcus said, stepping forward. “We have a serious problem. The perimeter sensors just picked up an unauthorized drone sweep over the eastern wing. And... you need to see this intercept we just pulled off Serena’s personal encrypted burner phone before we locked her in the vault.”

Victor’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. “What is it?”
“It’s not just Arthur Montigue backing her up,” Marcus replied grimly, holding out the tablet. “Serena wasn't acting alone. Someone inside our own syndicate tipped her off that you were investigating her finances last week. And that someone is planning to make a move on the estate before dawn.”
