Chapter 14 - Blood in the Bunker

-14-

The digital countdown on the bunker console ticked down mercilessly: 10... 9... 8...

Outside the inner vault door, the heavy hydraulic actuators began to groan as Julian Vance’s mercenaries attached a pneumatic breaching wedge to the reinforced hinges.

3... 2... 1...

With an ear-splitting screech of tearing metal, the inner vault door blew inward, crashing heavily onto the concrete floor of the bunker. A thick cloud of white smoke and dust billowed into the room. Through the haze, two tactical operatives charged in with rifles raised, shouting tactical commands.

I stood frozen in the center of the room, shielding Ethan with my entire body, closing my eyes as I waited for the inevitable shots to ring out.

Instead of gunfire, a deafening explosion echoed from the stairwell behind them.

BOOM!

The entire foundation of the bunker shuddered violently. A wall of blinding white light and concussive force swept through the corridor. The two operatives flying into the room were hurled backward against the concrete walls like ragdolls, their weapons spinning uselessly across the floor.

Julian Vance stumbled backward out of the smoke, coughing violently, his expensive overcoat scorched and blackened. He wiped the soot from his eyes and looked up—only to find a black tactical combat knife embedded deeply into the concrete doorframe precisely one inch from his right ear.

Victor Blackwood stepped out of the smoke and fire of the stairwell.

He moved with the terrifying speed and merciless grace of a ghost of vengeance. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket anymore; his black shirt was drenched in sweat and rain, his tactical vest loaded with spare magazines, and his eyes burned with a dark, primal rage that made Julian Vance pale instantly.

“Julian,” Victor said softly, his voice cutting through the ringing silence of the bunker like a razor.

Julian swallowed hard, slowly raising his hands while desperately trying to reach for a hidden backup holster inside his jacket. “Victor... wait. We can talk about the file. We can talk about the boy—”

Victor didn't let him finish. He closed the distance between them in a fraction of a second, grabbing Julian by the lapels of his coat and slamming him hard against the concrete wall with a bone-racking impact.

“You stepped foot in my house,” Victor whispered, his face inches from Julian’s, “you murdered an unarmed woman in my foyer, and you threatened my family.”

“You don't understand!” Julian choked out, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth as Victor’s grip tightened around his throat. “The surrogate program—the mother—she wasn't a random selection! She was a plant from the Directorate to secure the Blackwood lineage under our control! Ethan isn't just a surrogate, Victor—he’s the sole heir to the entire Syndicate Directorate, and you’ve been raising him as a pawn!”

Victor paused. For one agonizing second, his grip loosened slightly as the chilling words sank in.

I stood in the center of the room holding Ethan, my breath catching in my throat. Everything we thought we knew—the surrogate program, the mansion, the wealth, the mafia empire—was built on a foundation of lies engineered by the very men who had tried to destroy us tonight.

Victor slowly turned his head to look at me and little Ethan, his dark eyes filled with a heavy, profound sorrow mixed with an unbreakable protective fire. Then, he looked back down at Julian Vance.

“I don't care about their empire,” Victor said, his voice dropping to a lethal, final whisper. “And I don't care about their bloodline. Ethan is my son. End of story.”

With a single, effortless motion, Victor drove his fist into Julian’s jaw, knocking the syndicate leader out cold before he even hit the floor.
