Chapter 4 - The Matriarch's Secret-4

St. Jude’s Hospital sat on the edge of the city, its old brick façade shrouded in thick fog.

Spencer, accompanied by two armed private security guards he had summoned, walked down the quiet, sterile hallway of the intensive care unit. Charlee held his hand tightly, her small shoes squeaking against the polished linoleum floor.

They reached Room 412. Inside, an elderly woman with silver hair lay in a high-tech hospital bed, connected to heart monitors and oxygen tubes. Despite her frail appearance and pale skin, her dark blue eyes were sharp and clear as she turned her head toward the door.

"Charlee..." the old woman whispered, her voice weak and raspy.

"Grandma!" Charlee cried, breaking away from Spencer and rushing to the side of the bed. She carefully hugged the old woman, burying her face in the hospital blanket. "I found him, Grandma! I found the baby, and Mr. Spencer took us to his big house!"

Florence stroked Charlee’s soft hair, tears welling up in her aged eyes. Then, her gaze lifted and locked onto Spencer.

"Spencer..." Florence breathed, a sad, bitter smile touching her lips. "You look so much like your father, Richard. Except you have your mother's kind heart."

Spencer stepped closer to the bed, pulled up a vinyl chair, and sat down. "Florence... Casey from Child Services told me you worked at our mansion thirty years ago. Is it true? Are you... my father's sister? Or something else?"

Florence let out a weak, raspy sigh, looking at the ceiling monitors as they beeped softly.

"Thirty-two years ago, Spencer," Florence began quietly, "I was the head housekeeper at the Warren estate. Your father, Richard Warren, was a powerful, ruthless man who believed he could buy or control anything in the world. Your mother was very ill, bedridden upstairs."

Florence paused, taking a shallow breath through her oxygen mask.

"Richard forced himself on me, Spencer," Florence whispered, her voice trembling with decades of suppressed pain. "When I became pregnant, he threatened to ruin my family, brand me a thief, and put me in prison if I ever spoke a word. I gave birth to a daughter, Evelyn."

Spencer felt a heavy weight drop into his stomach. "Evelyn..."

"Richard paid me off to disappear," Florence continued. "I took Evelyn and raised her in secret, away from the Warren family’s dark shadow. Evelyn grew up, married, and had Charlee. But two years ago, Evelyn passed away from cancer. Charlee was all I had left."

Spencer looked down at Charlee, who was listening intently, her small hands holding her grandmother's fingers.

"If Evelyn was my half-sister..." Spencer said softly, "then Charlee is my niece."

"Yes," Florence said, clutching Spencer’s wrist with surprising strength. "Charlee is a Warren by blood, Spencer. But that isn't the reason I brought her back to Pinecrest. I was dying... I knew my heart was failing. I knew your brother Julian was systematically draining the company funds and destroying everything your father built. I sent Charlee to your estate to find you, because you were the only good man left in that cursed family."

Florence leaned closer, her eyes burning with intense urgency. "But you need to know the truth about Jocelyn Cooper, Spencer. Jocelyn wasn't just a patient at Pamela’s clinic. Jocelyn was Evelyn’s closest friend... and she was carrying your child to protect him from Julian!"
