Chapter 1 - The Shadow of Pinecrest-1

“Sir, I found your son beside the dumpster outside your mansion,” a soaking wet little girl said as she held a baby wrapped inside a black trash bag. The billionaire, who had been declared sterile twelve years earlier, didn't panic. He opened the letter taped to the baby's blanket and called his attorney, never realizing the traitor was already inside his own home.

“Sir, I found your son inside a garbage bag, right beside the wall surrounding your house.”

Spencer Warren opened the front door of his mansion in Pinecrest Heights, ready to send away whoever had interrupted his quiet Sunday.

But the moment he saw the seven-year-old girl standing in the drizzle, wearing torn clothes and cradling a crying bundle in her arms, he was speechless.

“I don't have any children,” he replied coldly. “And I can't have any.”

The little girl hugged the black trash bag closer to her chest.

“Then someone wanted you to believe that.”

Her name was Charlee. She had discovered the baby inside a cardboard box behind the dumpsters outside the mansion.

The newborn was wrapped in a blue blanket.

Charlee had been searching for food because she had spent the last two weeks sleeping in an abandoned apartment building after her grandmother, Florence, was admitted to the hospital.

Mrs. Mabel, the housekeeper, invited both of them inside and made them hot chocolate.

As she carefully unwrapped the baby, she discovered an envelope taped to the blanket.

It was addressed simply: For Spencer Warren.

Spencer recognized the handwriting immediately.

The letter described genetic samples he had frozen twelve years earlier before undergoing an experimental medical procedure.

It mentioned specific dates, the fertility clinic, and a security password known to only three people.

The baby slowly opened his eyes.

They were the exact same grayish-blue color as Spencer's.

“I knew he was yours,” Charlee said. “You both make the same face when you're upset.”

Before Spencer could process what he had just heard, Casey, a child welfare worker, arrived.

Mrs. Mabel had called the authorities as a precaution.

Casey explained that the baby would have to be placed in temporary protective care until his identity could be confirmed.

She also insisted that Charlee couldn't be left on her own.

The little girl wrapped both arms around Spencer's leg.

“Please don't let them take him away. When I found him, he was freezing. I promised I would never leave him alone again.”

Something deep inside Spencer broke. He had spent most of his life protecting himself from emotional attachments. But the fear in Charlee's eyes reminded him of the frightened little boy he had once been.

“They're both staying here,” he declared. “I'll sign for temporary guardianship and cover every expense.”

Casey looked at him suspiciously but eventually agreed, provided everything remained under official supervision.

Charlee asked if they could name the baby Dexter, after the little brother her mother had lost before she d:ie:d.

A few hours later, Spencer took Charlee shopping for clothes. While browsing a toy store, they unexpectedly ran into Dr. Pamela Ortiz, Spencer's former fiancée and the fertility specialist who had preserved his genetic samples.

When Charlee innocently explained how she had found baby Dexter, Pamela's face went completely pale.

“Spencer, I need to speak with you... alone.”

“What do you know?”

Tears filled Pamela's eyes.

“A year ago, I used your genetic material without your permission. One of my patients desperately wanted to become a mother. I convinced myself I was doing the right thing.”

Spencer felt as though the floor had vanished beneath him.

“Who was she?”

Pamela remained silent for several long seconds before answering.

“Jocelyn Cooper. But she would never have abandoned her baby. If Dexter ended up in a garbage bag outside your house, someone tried to k:ill him.”

At that exact moment, Spencer's phone rang.

It was Casey.

“Mr. Warren, I found Charlee's grandmother. She worked in your household thirty years ago... and she claims your father had a daughter with her.”

Spencer looked across the toy store at Charlee, who was hugging a blue teddy bear she wanted to give baby Dexter.

The little girl who had just rescued his possible son might actually be his own niece.

And what Florence was about to reveal would turn that mansion into the scene of a family betrayal no one could ever forgive.

The rain continued to fall in heavy, relentless sheets against the glass windows of the toy store. Spencer Warren stood frozen among shelves of colorful teddy bears and plastic fire trucks, the phone pressed hard against his ear. Casey’s words echoed in his head with the deafening force of a thunderclap.

Your father had a daughter with her.

Across the store, seven-year-old Charlee held up a fluffy blue teddy bear, her eyes wide with innocent joy. She pulled it close to her damp chest, hugging it tight as if it were the most precious treasure in the world. Spencer looked at her small, fragile frame, taking in the faint resemblance he had failed to see before—the sharp curve of her jaw, the slight dimple on her left cheek, and those same piercing, grayish-blue eyes that had haunted his own reflection for forty years.

He turned slowly back to Dr. Pamela Ortiz. The fertility specialist was trembling, her hands clutching her designer handbag so tightly her knuckles were white.

"Pamela," Spencer said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous growl. "You told me Jocelyn Cooper was the mother. If Jocelyn wanted a child so badly, why would my son end up in a trash bag outside my gate? And who knew about those frozen samples besides you and me?"

Pamela stepped back, looking around the store nervously. "Spencer... there was a third person. When the security password was entered into the clinic's digital vault twelve months ago, it wasn't typed from my terminal. It came from an encrypted IP address originating inside Warren Global Enterprise Headquarters."

Spencer’s heart slammed against his ribs. Warren Global Enterprise was his family's multi-billion-dollar holding firm. The only people with high-level server access were him, his chief legal officer, and his younger half-brother, Julian Warren.

Before Spencer could process the terrifying implication, his phone vibrated with a text message from Mrs. Mabel back at the mansion:

Mr. Spencer, please hurry back. Mr. Julian arrived unannounced with two private security guards. He is insisting on taking baby Dexter to a private medical facility for 'testing.' I am blocking the nursery door, but he is getting very aggressive.

A cold wave of adrenaline flooded Spencer’s veins. He tucked his phone into his coat, crossed the aisle in three quick strides, and picked Charlee up into his arms, blue bear and all.

"Spencer, what's happening?" Charlee asked, her small hands wrapping around his neck.

"We're going home, Charlee," Spencer whispered, his jaw set like iron. "Hold on tight."

He glared at Pamela Ortiz. "You're coming with us, Pamela. If my son or my family is in danger, you're going to answer every question the police have. Or I swear I will burn your medical license and your life to the ground."

May you like

They hurried out into the downpour. Spencer buckled Charlee into the back seat of his black armored SUV, shoved Pamela into the passenger side, and slammed his foot onto the accelerator. As the heavy vehicle roared down the winding roads of Pinecrest Heights toward the gated estate, Spencer looked in the rearview mirror at the little girl who had saved his son.

If Florence—Charlee's grandmother—was indeed his late father's secret daughter, then Charlee wasn't just a stray child from the streets. She was a Warren. She was blood. And someone was currently inside his mansion, trying to erase every trace of the family’s true heirs.
