Chapter 5 - The Unmasking-5

Grant stared at her, his jaw working silently as the words hung in the air like heavy smoke.
"Your... your opening address?" Grant stammered, his voice suddenly losing its aggressive edge as he looked from her emerald gown to the massive sapphire ring on her finger, and finally to the four security guards standing in flawless formation around her. "What are you talking about, Seraphina? Stop playing games! Where did you get that ring?"
Before Seraphina could answer, the master of ceremonies stepped down from the stage, holding a wireless microphone. He bowed deeply toward Seraphina, his posture radiating complete submission.
"Madam Chairwoman," the presenter said deferentially, "the podium is ready for your keynote speech. The regional board members and federal infrastructure delegates are awaiting your instructions."
The entire glass atrium went so quiet that the sound of the ocean waves crashing against the museum’s outer stone wall could be heard clearly.
Grant’s face drained of every ounce of color. The deep red flush of anger vanished, replaced by an absolute, ghastly white. His knees trembled beneath his tailored trousers, and he instinctively reached out to grab the edge of a nearby cocktail table to keep himself from collapsing.
"Chairwoman..." Grant whispered, his voice cracking violently. "No... no, that’s impossible. You're Seraphina. You're my wife. You... you lived in a rented apartment... you drove a ten-year-old car..."
Seraphina walked past him, her emerald silk dress brushing against his leg. She did not stop. She did not look back. She mounted the short flight of stairs leading to the main stage and stepped behind the polished crystal podium.
Julian Vance adjusted the microphone for her, then turned to face the crowd, standing at attention beside the stage.
Seraphina looked out over the sea of five hundred elite guests. She saw Mavis Holloway sitting frozen at her table, her mouth open in a silent scream of horror. She saw Brielle clutching her mother's arm, her eyes wide with terror. She saw Delaney Cross slowly backing away from the table, trying to merge into the shadows of the crowd.
And directly in front of the stage stood Grant Holloway, looking like a man who had walked off the edge of a cliff and was still waiting to hit the ground.
Seraphina placed her hands flat against the crystal podium, her sapphire ring glowing under the stage lights.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Seraphina began, her clear, resonant voice echoing through the state-of-the-art sound system. "I am Seraphina Bellamy. Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer of Bellamy Holdings."
A wave of gasps rippled through the audience, followed by a frantic flurry of whispers among the bank executives and journalists.
"For eighty years," Seraphina continued calmly, "Bellamy Holdings has operated on a foundation of integrity, strength, and silent stewardship. Seven years ago, under the instructions of my late grandfather, Arthur Bellamy, I stepped into the world without my title to observe the true measure of those who build empires—and those who merely seek to consume them."
She turned her gaze slowly, deliberately, until it rested flatly on Grant.
"Over the past five years, Bellamy Holdings, through its private subsidiaries Aegis Capital and Vanguard Logistics, has provided over one hundred and forty million dollars in debt financing and equity support to a local entity known as the Holloway Meridian Group."
Grant’s chest heaved. He tried to speak, but no sound emerged from his dry throat.
"My husband, Grant Holloway," Seraphina said, her voice dropping into an icy, measured tone that cut through the room like a razor, "has believed for five years that he was a business genius. He believed he was closing major international deals through his own intellect and instinct. He did not know that every contract he signed was drafted in my private study. He did not know that every bank loan approved for his firm was personally guaranteed by my signature."

The reporters began writing furiously, camera shutters clicking at a frantic rate.
"Grant Holloway believed he gave me a life," Seraphina said softly, her lips curving into a distant, pitying smile. "He told me tonight, before leaving me home to clean broken dishes, that before I met him, I had nothing. He took his mistress to this gala to celebrate his success, completely unaware that the carpet he is standing on, the suit he is wearing, and the very air his company breathes... belong entirely to me."
