Chapter 4 - The Grand Descent-4

A collective hush fell over the five hundred guests inside the glass ballroom. Heads turned toward the grand staircase, and conversations died mid-sentence. Cameras were raised, their red recording indicators blinking in unison as every eye in the room locked onto the top landing.

Four tall, broad-shouldered security guards in dark suits stepped out first, taking positions along the marble balustrade with military precision. Behind them walked Julian Vance, his expression solemn and commanding.

And then, she stepped into the light.

Seraphina descended the marble stairs with slow, unhurried grace. The emerald silk gown clung to her tall, commanding silhouette, flowing around her ankles like shimmering ocean water. Her dark hair was styled in an intricate, regal updo, exposing the flawless line of her neck and a pair of drop-diamond earrings that caught the light like falling stars.

On her right hand, resting visibly against the polished dark wood of the handrail, was the 45-carat Bellamy Sapphire—its deep, hypnotic blue hue instantly recognizable to every high-level investor in the room.

The camera flashes exploded into a blinding storm of white light.

At the front table, Grant Holloway had just raised his champagne glass to his lips. When his eyes landed on the woman walking down the stairs, his hand froze mid-air. His breath caught violently in his chest, and his eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated confusion.

"What..." Grant muttered, his brain completely failing to process the visual information before him. "What is she doing here?"

Beside him, Delaney Cross dropped her napkin onto the table, her eyes scanning Seraphina from head to toe. "Grant... isn't that... isn't that your wife?"

Mavis Holloway, who had been boasting to a bank president’s wife at the adjacent table, turned toward the stairs and let out a sharp, choked gasp. "Seraphina? How did that girl get in here?! Who gave her those clothes?!"

Brielle’s glass of sparkling water slipped from her fingers, shattering against the marble floor—a chaotic echo of the dish Seraphina had gathered hours earlier in Palm Beach. "She... she stole a dress! She crashed the gala! Grant, do something! She’s going to embarrass us in front of the entire board!"

Grant’s confusion instantly morphed into a surge of dark, furious humiliation. He assumed Seraphina had somehow tracked his car to Miami, spent her small personal savings to rent a high-end dress, and sneaked past security to confront him about Delaney in public.

"That stupid, insane woman," Grant growled between clenched teeth, his face flushing a dark, angry red. He slammed his champagne glass onto the table, pushing his chair back with a harsh screech. "She thinks she can ruin my biggest night? I am going to have security throw her out on the street!"

"Grant, wait!" Delaney warned, noticing for the first time the way the security detail surrounded Seraphina, or how Julian Vance—the untouchable Executive Vice President of Bellamy Holdings—was walking two steps behind her like a loyal general. "Look at Julian Vance! Why is he with her?"

"She probably tricked a staff member!" Grant snapped, completely blinded by his own arrogance.

He straightened his tuxedo lapels, smoothed his hair, and marched directly toward the base of the grand staircase, intent on grabbing Seraphina by the arm and dragging her into the shadows before she could utter a single word.

Seraphina reached the bottom step. She did not look at the crowd; her gaze swept calmly across the room until it locked onto Grant, who was striding toward her with his finger raised.

"Seraphina!" Grant hissed loudly as he approached the perimeter of her security detail. "What the hell is wrong with you?! Have you completely lost your mind?! Take off that ridiculous dress and get out of here before I call the police!"

Julian Vance immediately stepped between Grant and Seraphina, placing a heavy, gloved hand against Grant’s chest, stopping him dead in his tracks.

"Step back, sir," Julian commanded, his voice echoing with lethal calm.

"Do you know who I am?!" Grant roared, glaring over Julian’s shoulder at his wife. "Seraphina, tell this guard to move! How dare you crash this event! You belong at home! You are ruining my life!"

Seraphina stopped. She looked down at Grant from the bottom step, her expression serene, unbothered, and utterly cold.

She did not raise her voice. She did not argue. She simply raised her right hand, allowing the massive 45-carat sapphire to catch the full glare of the chandelier lights, and looked past him toward the podium.

"Let him speak, Julian," Seraphina said softly, her voice carrying clearly through the silent room. "It is important that the press hears everything he has to say before I deliver my opening address."
