Chapter 8 - The Gathering Storm

8 - 15
Two weeks passed with deceptive tranquility across the Duca estate. The public scandal surrounding St. Jude’s Hospital dominated nightly news broadcasts, leading to the immediate resignation of the city’s chief prosecutor and the indictment of several high-ranking municipal officials involved in the conspiracy to fabricate the RICO case against Alessandro’s syndicate.
Inside the estate, life had found a new, harmonious rhythm. Sophia Alvarez had transitioned smoothly into her new role as head of domestic inventory coordination, bringing an unprecedented level of organization and vigilance to the household operations. And little Emma had become a beloved fixture of the estate, her joyful laughter echoing down the grand marble hallways and bringing a touch of warmth to a fortress that had long been devoid of childhood innocence.
Yet, in the underworld outside the perimeter walls, tension was reaching a boiling point.
Don Vincente Moretti, patriarch of the aging Moretti syndicate, paced furiously across the Persian rug of his downtown penthouse office. His knuckles were white as he gripped a crystal tumbler of scotch.
"How is that possible?" Moretti roared, slamming the glass down onto a mahogany table so hard that the amber liquid sloshed over the rim. "We spent six months financing Vance’s hospital operations! We spent a million dollars greasing the wheels of that federal task force to ensure Duca was indicted by the end of the quarter! And in one single night, everything is wiped out? Vance is in a federal holding cell, and Duca is cleaner than ever?"
Across the room stood Victor Russo, Moretti’s chief consigliere and the mastermind behind the operational infiltration of St. Jude’s. Russo adjusted his silk tie, his face grim and pale.
"It wasn't a police raid, Don Moretti," Russo said quietly. "It was an inside exposure. Duca didn't just defend himself; he dismantled our entire data network from the root. And rumor has it... it started from inside his own kitchen."
"Inside his kitchen?" Moretti sneered, narrowing his eyes. "What does that even mean? A chef forgot to wash the dishes?"
"No," Russo replied, lowering his voice. "A domestic worker’s child. A three-year-old girl smelled something in his morning coffee that shouldn't have been there."
Moretti stared at his consigliere in stunned silence before throwing his head back and letting out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "A child? You’re telling me thirty years of syndicate planning, millions of dollars in bribes, and a federal conspiracy were brought down by a toddler with a sensitive nose?"

"I’m telling you that Duca is untouchable right now," Russo said flatly. "And if we don't strike back decisively—not through poisoned coffee or secret informants, but through direct, overwhelming force—the other families will think we’re weak, and they’ll carve up our territory before the month is out."
Moretti’s laughter died instantly. His eyes hardened into two dark slits of pure malice. "Then we don't wait for him to come to us. We hit his main shipping hub at Pier 9 tomorrow night. Burn it to the ground. Let Duca see what happens when he plays games with the Moretti name."
