Chapter 3 - The Secret of St. Jude's

3 - 15

The private study on the third floor of the Duca estate was a sanctuary of dark mahogany, leather-bound ledgers, and bulletproof windows overlooking the sprawling, manicured gardens below. The morning storm had finally broken, leaving behind a heavy, mist-laden fog that clung to the perimeter walls like a shroud.

Alessandro sat behind his massive executive desk, staring down at a decrypted dossier retrieved from Danny’s encrypted phone. The glowing screen of his secure laptop illuminated the sharp, unforgiving angles of his face.

Next to the laptop sat Mr. Hopper—the battered gray stuffed rabbit, its ear now meticulously repaired with fine, durable gray thread by one of the estate’s master tailors, sitting upright as if guarding the documents.

A soft knock echoed at the heavy oak door.

"Enter," Alessandro commanded without looking up.

Marco stepped into the study, closing the door securely behind him. He looked grave, holding a thick manila folder stamped with the red classification seal of the inner syndicate archives.

"We finished processing Danny’s digital footprint," Marco reported, walking over to the desk and laying the folder down. "His offshore accounts trace directly back to a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands. But that’s not the interesting part, Boss."

Alessandro looked up, his dark eyes narrowing. "Talk."

"We cross-referenced the corporate registration numbers with our internal intelligence records from the hospital district," Marco continued, pulling a single glossy photograph from the folder and placing it beside Mr. Hopper. "The shell corporation is funded by a holding entity controlled by Dr. Alistair Vance—the chief medical administrator of St. Jude’s Hospital."

Alessandro’s gaze locked onto the photograph. It showed an impeccably dressed, middle-aged man with silver-rimmed glasses standing outside the executive entrance of St. Jude’s, shaking hands with a high-ranking federal prosecutor who had been trying to indict the Duca syndicate for over three years.

"St. Jude’s again," Alessandro muttered, leaning back in his leather chair. "It seems every road of corruption in this city eventually leads back to that hospital."

"It goes deeper than that," Marco said, his voice dropping lower. "I had our contacts in the coroner’s office pull the original, unredacted autopsy file of Sophia’s late husband—Thomas Alvarez. The official hospital report listed his cause of death as acute myocardial infarction. But our independent lab analysis on the tissue samples we recovered from his medical locker confirms something entirely different."

Alessandro didn't need to ask. "The same synthetic cardiac depressant Danny put in my coffee."

"Exact same chemical signature," Marco confirmed. "Thomas Alvarez wasn't a patient who suffered a natural heart attack. He was a maintenance worker on the third floor of St. Jude’s—the secure psychiatric and experimental research wing. Three months ago, he walked into a restricted archive room during his night shift and caught Dr. Vance and a team of federal agents transferring illegal pharmaceutical trial logs to an off-site federal server."

The pieces of the puzzle clicked together with terrifying precision in Alessandro’s mind.

Thomas Alvarez had witnessed a conspiracy involving corrupt hospital administrators, experimental pharmacology, and federal law enforcement officials collaborating to build an airtight RICO case against the Duca syndicate—not through legitimate police work, but through targeted assassinations disguised as medical emergencies. When Thomas threatened to expose them, Dr. Vance had eliminated him using the very chemical agents stored in the hospital's research vaults.

And when Sophia and her three-year-old daughter were left destitute, the hospital HR department had conveniently "placed" Sophia as a domestic worker in the Duca estate—hoping to position a sleeper agent inside Alessandro’s home to finish the job once and for all.

Only they hadn't counted on a three-year-old girl with an uncanny sense of smell, gifted with the memory of a father who had smelled like bitter medicine every night before he went to sleep and never woke up.

"Where is Dr. Vance right now?" Alessandro asked, his voice chillingly calm.

"Attending a charity medical gala at the downtown opera house," Marco replied smoothly. "Surrounded by city councilmen, judges, and federal prosecutors."

Alessandro stood up from his desk, buttoning his tailored suit jacket with deliberate precision. He reached down, picked up Mr. Hopper by his newly mended ear, and held it for a brief second before placing it gently back on the corner of the blotter.

"Get the cars ready, Marco," Alessandro instructed, his eyes flashing with lethal intent. "We are going to the opera house. It’s time to give the good doctor a taste of his own medicine."
