Chapter 7 - The Ripple Effect

Though the immediate threat within the Duca estate had been neutralized and Dr. Alistair Vance’s corrupt medical empire was collapsing under the weight of nationwide media scrutiny, the underworld of the city was a living, breathing organism that reacted violently to sudden shifts in power. When news broke that the federal task force’s primary informants and fabricated evidence pipelines had been systematically obliterated in a single midnight data dump, the rival syndicates operating across the eastern docks began to stir.
Alessandro Duca sat in his private study late that evening, reviewing shipping manifests and export ledgers with Marco. The desk lamp cast a warm amber circle over the leather-bound documents, while outside, the cicadas hummed a steady summer rhythm in the dark gardens below.
"The Moretti family is making noise down at Pier 4," Marco reported, leaning against the edge of the mahogany bookshelf. "They think that with St. Jude’s Hospital and the federal task force tied up in corruption scandals, our grip on the import channels is slipping."
Alessandro didn't look up from his ledger. He turned a page slowly, his expression a mask of cold, calculated indifference. "Moretti has always confused ambition with stupidity. He thinks a wounded bear is an easy target, forgetting that a wounded bear fights with twice the lethality."
"Shall I send a message?" Marco asked, his hand resting casually near his holster.
"Not yet," Alessandro replied calmly. "Let them make their move. A cornered rat always runs toward the light. If we crush them in the shadows, they remain martyrs to their own delusions. If we let them step into the open daylight of our trade routes, we can dismantle their entire operation so thoroughly that nobody in this city will ever dare challenge a Duca contract again."
Marco nodded slowly, acknowledging the superior tactical vision of his boss. "Understood. I’ll keep the surveillance teams on double rotation around the docks. By the way... Sophia and Emma have settled into the East Wing guest quarters. The staff has taken quite a liking to the little one. The cooks even baked her a custom batch of honey biscuits this afternoon."
A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched the corners of Alessandro’s mouth. "Make sure they have everything they need. Sophia is no longer housekeeping staff. Assign her as head of domestic inventory coordination. She has proven she has a much sharper eye for detail than any of our previous managers."

"It will be done tonight, Boss," Marco said, turning and exiting the study with silent, disciplined strides.
Alessandro leaned back in his leather executive chair, his gaze drifting toward the corner of the desk where Mr. Hopper sat upright beside the secure laptop. The mended gray ear stood tall, a quiet reminder that sometimes the most dangerous conspiracies in the world could be unraveled not by heavily armed soldiers or high-tech surveillance gear, but by the innocent, uncorrupted instincts of a three-year-old child.
