Chapter 11 - The Fall of the Moretti Dynasty

11 - 15
The sun was just beginning to peek over the eastern horizon, painting the sky in shades of bruised purple and brilliant gold, when the black armored Mercedes pulled up outside the decaying, fortress-like mansion of Don Vincente Moretti on the bluff overlooking the bay.
There were no guards at the front gates. They had either fled in terror upon hearing the news of Pier 9’s catastrophic failure or had already switched their allegiance to the rising tide of the Duca syndicate.
Alessandro Duca walked up the grand stone steps of the Moretti villa, his heavy leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the marble. Marco and two elite operatives flanked him, their weapons drawn and ready for any final, desperate resistance.
Alessandro raised his right hand and pushed the massive oak double doors inward. They swung open with a slow, mournful creak.
Inside the darkened drawing room, Don Vincente Moretti sat alone behind his ornate mahogany desk. He looked every bit of his seventy years—his face lined with exhaustion, his hands trembling slightly as he stared down at an empty glass of scotch. He knew the end had arrived. There were no more cards to play, no more alliances to buy, no more federal detectives to manipulate.
Alessandro walked across the Persian rug and stopped directly in front of the desk. He didn't sit down. He simply looked down at the aging patriarch with a gaze devoid of triumph, filled only with the cold, absolute certainty of natural law.
"It’s over, Vincente," Alessandro said quietly.
Moretti looked up slowly, his dark eyes flashing with a last spark of defiant pride. "You think destroying my strike team at Pier 9 wins you the city, Duca? There will always be someone else. Another family, another syndicate, another challenger waiting in the shadows."
"Perhaps," Alessandro replied evenly. "But they will know the cost of betrayal. They will know what happens when men try to poison a man who is protected by truth."
Moretti let out a bitter, rattling sigh, slumping back into his leather chair. He reached slowly into his breast pocket, as if searching for a final document or a last cigar.
Marco raised his pistol instantly. "Stop! Hands on the desk!"
Moretti ignored him. He pulled a small, silver-plated revolver from his pocket, laid it flat on the mahogany surface, and pushed it across the wood toward Alessandro.
"I built this family with my own hands fifty years ago," Moretti whispered, his voice cracking with defeat. "I thought I was protecting our legacy. Instead... I built a house of cards."
Alessandro looked down at the surrendered weapon, then back at the defeated patriarch. He reached out, picked up the revolver, and slipped it into his coat pocket.

"Your legacy died the moment you traded honor for poison," Alessandro said coldly. "Effective today, the Moretti name ceases to exist in this city. Your ports, your warehouses, and your assets are forfeit to the Duca syndicate. Pack your bags, Vincente. You have twenty-four hours to leave this state, and if you ever set foot within city limits again, I won't send a warning."
Without waiting for a reply, Alessandro turned on his heel and walked out of the Moretti villa, leaving the fallen don alone in the dim morning light.
