Chapter 4 - The Opera House Gala

4 - 15
The grand chandelier of the metropolitan opera house burned with the brilliance of ten thousand crystals, casting a dazzling golden glow over the sea of silk gowns, tailored tuxedos, and diamond-encrusted jewelry. Classical notes from a live string orchestra drifted through the vaulted ceilings, providing an elegant, soothing soundtrack to the city’s elite charity gala.
At the center of attention near the VIP reception lounge stood Dr. Alistair Vance. He held a flute of imported champagne in one hand, laughing heartily as he shook hands with the city’s chief of police and the district’s senior federal prosecutor. To everyone in the room, Dr. Vance was a pillar of philanthropy, medical innovation, and civic virtue.
He had no idea that the front doors of the opera house had just swung open in absolute silence.
Alessandro Duca walked into the grand foyer flanked by Marco and four elite security operatives in immaculate black suits. They moved with the terrifying, synchronized grace of apex predators entering a grazing field. The ambient chatter near the entrance died instantly. High-society socialites took one look at Alessandro’s freezing black eyes and scattered like autumn leaves, creating a wide, unobstructed path straight toward the VIP lounge.
Dr. Vance stopped mid-sentence, his champagne glass freezing halfway to his mouth as he saw Alessandro approaching.
"Mr... Mr. Duca," Dr. Vance stammered, his professional composure cracking like cheap glass. "I—I didn't realize you were attending tonight’s fundraiser. Your philanthropic contributions to the medical foundation are always deeply appreciated, but..."
"Save the performance, Alistair," Alessandro interrupted, his voice cutting through the ambient string music with razor-sharp clarity.
Alessandro stopped two paces away from the doctor. The federal prosecutor stepped forward defensively, resting a hand on his lapel. "Mr. Duca, I am Special Agent Miller of the federal task force. I must remind you that harassing public officials in a public venue—"
Alessandro didn't even look at the federal agent. He raised his hand slightly, and Marco immediately stepped forward, placing a heavy manila folder directly on the silver-plated catering table in front of Dr. Vance.
"Open it," Alessandro commanded.
Dr. Vance’s trembling fingers pried open the folder. The top document was a certified chemical breakdown analysis of the synthetic cardiac depressant recovered from Danny’s pantry lockbox, cross-referenced with the tissue pathology report of Thomas Alvarez’s secret autopsy from St. Jude’s Hospital.
The color drained entirely from the doctor’s face. His knees buckled slightly, forcing him to grip the edge of the catering table for support.
"This... this is a fabrication," Dr. Vance whispered, his voice trembling so violently that the champagne flute in his hand rattled against the crystal rim. "You have no legal jurisdiction, no admissible evidence—"
"I have the confession of your hired cook, Danny, currently residing in my basement holding cells," Alessandro said smoothly, stepping closer until his shadow completely enveloped the doctor. "I have the financial ledgers connecting your shell corporation in the Caymans to the purchase of synthetic toxins. And most importantly... I have the testimony of a three-year-old girl whose father you murdered because he happened to walk into the wrong room on the third floor of your hospital."
Special Agent Miller frowned, glancing nervously between Alessandro and the pale, sweating doctor. "Dr. Vance, what is this about? Is there an ongoing investigation—"
"He doesn't investigate crime, Agent Miller," Alessandro said, finally turning his dark gaze toward the federal prosecutor with a chilling smile. "He manufactures it. For three years, your task force has been trying to frame my syndicate for murders we never committed, using corrupt medical examiners and falsified hospital autopsies to manufacture a RICO indictment. And Dr. Vance here was your primary supplier of fabricated evidence and convenient cadavers."
The surrounding crowd of socialites and city officials began to murmur anxiously, backing away in horror as the glittering charity gala transformed into an arena of lethal exposure.
Dr. Vance realized he was completely cornered. In a desperate, panic-fueled motion, he slammed his champagne flute down onto the table, shattered the stem, and lunged forward with the jagged glass shard aimed directly at Alessandro’s throat.
It was a pathetic, amateur move born of pure terror.
Before the glass could even cross the midpoint of the table, Alessandro’s hand shot out like a striking viper. He caught Dr. Vance’s wrist in a crushing grip, twisting it sharply until a sickening pop echoed through the foyer.
The jagged glass dropped harmlessly to the marble floor.

Dr. Vance let out a piercing shriek of agony as Alessandro slammed him face-first against the catered buffet table, scattering silver trays of caviar and fruit across the floor.
"Marco," Alessandro said coldly, releasing the doctor’s broken wrist and stepping back to adjust his cuffs. "Pack him into the trunk. We are going to visit St. Jude’s Hospital. It’s time to clean house from the foundation up."
