Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Estate-8-

Night had fallen over the city, turning the relentless rain into a cold, biting mist that clung to the dark stone walls of the ancestral Castillo estate. The iron gates stood open, welcoming no one, guarding a fortress that had lost its soul.
Adrian walked up the long, winding gravel driveway, his shoes sinking into the wet mud, his expensive suit ruined beyond repair. He pushed open the heavy front door of the manor, expecting the warm glow of the chandeliers and the cold, commanding presence of his mother waiting to pass final judgment.
Instead, the foyer was dark.
Only a single wall sconce flickered near the base of the grand staircase, casting long, eerie shadows across the marble floor. The house was dead silent—no staff bustling about, no muffled conversations from the study, no sound of footsteps in the gallery.
“Mother?” Adrian called out, his voice echoing hollowly through the cavernous space. “Vanessa? Is anyone here?”
No answer.
He walked down the long corridor toward his mother’s private study. The heavy mahogany door stood slightly ajar. A thin strip of yellow light spilled out onto the dark Persian rug.
Adrian pushed the door open and stepped inside.
Margaret Castillo sat behind her antique mahogany desk, her posture as rigid and upright as ever, her hands folded neatly over a ledger. But something was profoundly wrong. Her head was tilted back at an unnatural angle against the high-backed leather chair, her eyes fixed blankly on the ornate plaster molding of the ceiling. A crystal decanter of scotch and a single crystal glass sat on the edge of the desk—half-filled, untouched.
“Mother?” Adrian whispered, a sudden wave of primal dread washing over him. He hurried across the room, stopping abruptly as he reached the side of the desk.
Margaret did not move. Her skin was the color of old parchment, her lips pressed into a thin, colorless line. On the desk directly in front of her lay an open document—a legal notice bearing the seal of the federal prosecutor’s office.
NOTICE OF FEDERAL INVESTIGATION:
Corporate Fraud, Insider Trading, and Embezzlement Audit of Castillo Global Holdings & Associated Shell Entities.
Adrian’s breath hitched in his throat. He reached out, his trembling fingers brushing against his mother’s wrist.
Ice cold. There was no pulse.
The stress of the federal audit, combined with the sudden collapse of the family trust’s liquidity following Julian’s scandalous paternity exposure and the freezing of offshore accounts, had triggered a catastrophic cardiac arrest. The queen of the Castillo empire had fallen, not in a blaze of corporate glory, but alone in the dark, surrounded by the rotting wreckage of her own machinations.
“No...” Adrian muttered, staggering backward until his spine hit the mahogany bookshelves, sending a cascade of leather-bound books crashing down around his feet. “No, no, no...”
He fell to his knees on the Persian rug, burying his face in his hands as a dry, suffocating sob tore from his chest.
She was gone. The empire was gone. His money was gone. His family was gone.
The door behind him creaked open slowly.
Adrian didn’t turn around. He stayed kneeling on the floor, staring at the scattered books.
“You’re too late, brother,” Julian’s voice echoed coldly from the doorway.
Adrian slowly lifted his head, turning to look over his shoulder. Julian stood in the threshold, his clothes disheveled, his jaw bruised from Adrian’s punch earlier that day, his eyes wild and bloodshot with panic. Gone was the smug, untouchable corporate predator; in his place stood a desperate, cornered rat.
“She’s dead, Julian,” Adrian said, his voice entirely devoid of inflection, sounding like a ghost speaking from a tomb.
Julian stepped into the room, glancing briefly at their mother’s lifeless form before looking down at the open federal notice on the desk. He let out a harsh, manic laugh, running both hands through his hair.
“The accounts are frozen,” Julian muttered, his voice shaking. “All of them. Federal marshals seized the Swiss portfolios twenty minutes ago. The board has invoked emergency removal clauses. I’m indicted, Adrian. We’re both indicted.”
Adrian slowly stood up, brushing the dust from his ruined trousers. He looked at his younger brother—the golden boy, the favored son, the mastermind who had stolen his wife, his child, and his legacy.

“You wanted the throne, Julian,” Adrian said quietly, stepping closer to his brother until their eyes met. “Enjoy the crown.”
Without waiting for a response, Adrian turned his back on his brother, walked out of the study, and stepped out of the Castillo estate into the cold, driving rain, leaving the rotting empire behind forever.
