Chapter 3 - The Poisoned Bloodline-3-

The silence that followed Dr. Reynolds’ revelation was heavier than lead, pressing down on the walls of the examination room until the very air felt suffocating. Adrian stood paralyzed, his fingers still clamped around the metal rail of the examination table, his knuckles bruised from the pressure. His mind raced frantically, trying to reject the logic, trying to find any flaw in the immutable science laid out on the backlit screen before him.

“What... what did you just say?” Adrian whispered, his voice stripped of all its previous arrogance, reduced to a hollow, trembling rasp. He turned his head slowly, his gaze shifting from Chloe’s tear-stained, guilt-ridden face to his sister, Vanessa, who had frozen by the door like a statue carved from salt.

“Fifty percent DNA lineage,” Adrian repeated, tasting the metallic bitterness of the words on his tongue. “That’s... that’s impossible. That’s sibling markers. Or... or parental markers.” He whipped his head back toward Dr. Reynolds, his eyes bloodshot and wide with panic. “Are you telling me... are you implying that...”

“I am not implying anything, Mr. Castillo,” Dr. Reynolds interrupted, his voice steady, clinical, and completely devoid of pity. He picked up a laser pointer, clicking it on to project a glowing red dot directly onto the genetic sequence displayed on the wall monitor. “Science does not deal in implications. It deals in verifiable facts. The fetus carried by Miss Vance shares a direct primary paternal allele match with an individual whose genetic profile is already registered in our secure family registry under the Castillo lineage umbrella.”

Vanessa let out a sharp, choked gasp, pressing both hands over her mouth as if trying to physically force the words back down her throat. Her knees buckled slightly, and she had to catch herself against the edge of the nurse’s station counter.

“No,” Vanessa hissed, shaking her head violently from side to side, her blonde hair whipping around her face. “That’s a clerical error. It has to be. Run the sequencing again, Doctor. Someone mixed up the vials in the lab. That happens all the time in these private clinics—cross-contamination, lazy technicians, sloppy record-keeping! My brother is the only Castillo male of his generation! There is no one else!”

“There are no clerical errors in my laboratory, Ms. Castillo,” Dr. Reynolds replied coldly, turning off the laser pointer and resting his hands flat on the desk. “Every sample is sequenced twice, cross-verified with biometirc identity checks, and encrypted under federal medical compliance standards. The DNA donor for this pregnancy is a male of adult age, possessing primary Castillo markers combined with specific recessive genetic markers unique to your direct family tree.”

Adrian felt the floor drop out from beneath him. A cold sweat broke out across the back of his neck, soaking through his expensive shirt. The room seemed to tilt sideways. He remembered his mother, Margaret Castillo, whispering in the dark hallways of their ancestral estate years ago—rumors whispered behind closed doors, old scandals buried deep beneath the family’s polished public veneer, secrets that the Castillo name had spent decades paying off newspapers and doctors to keep hidden.

He looked down at Chloe, who had curled herself into a tighter ball, sobbing uncontrollably now, her defense completely shattered.

“Chloe,” Adrian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, deadly whisper as he walked slowly toward her. He reached out, grabbing her by the collar of her cashmere shawl and jerking her upward so her face was inches from his. “Look at me. Look me in the eye right now and tell me the truth. If it wasn’t some random stranger, and it wasn’t me... who was it?”

Chloe choked on her tears, her body shaking violently in his grip. She didn’t try to pull away. She knew the game was over. The illusion had been ripped apart, and the ugly, rotting core of their secret world lay exposed in the harsh fluorescent light.

“I... I had to,” Chloe whimpered, her voice breaking into a ragged sob. “He... he promised me security. He promised me the penthouse. He said that if I played my cards right, I could secure my future no matter what happened with you and Elena...”

“Who?!” Adrian roared, shaking her violently, his fingers digging into the fabric of her shawl. “Name him! Name the son of a bitch!”

Before Chloe could force the name past her lips, the heavy door to the consultation room swung open with a sharp click.

A figure stepped out from the private corridor connecting the VIP suites, moving with an unhurried, arrogant gait that Adrian had recognized since childhood. A man wearing an identical bespoke charcoal suit, smelling of the exact same expensive cedarwood cologne, stood in the doorway with his hands casually slipped into his trouser pockets.

Julian Castillo.

Adrian’s younger brother. The golden-boy vice president of international acquisitions. The prodigal son whom their mother had always favored, the one who lived in the penthouse downtown, the one who supposedly spent his weekends handling high-level corporate mergers in Zurich and Singapore.

Julian smiled. It was the exact same cold, predatory smirk that Adrian had seen in the mirror thousands of times.

“Save your breath, big brother,” Julian said smoothly, stepping fully into the room and glancing down at Chloe with an expression of mild, amused detachment. “You always were a bit slow on the uptake, Adrian. While you were busy crying over Elena’s cooking and playing the dutiful husband for the public, some of us were actually building a real dynasty.”
