Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a Lie-2-

The clinical lights overhead hummed with a low, agonizing frequency that seemed to vibrate directly inside Adrian’s skull. For a moment, the world shrank down to the harsh white glare reflecting off the chrome casing of the ultrasound machine and the dead, unblinking stare of Dr. Reynolds.
“What kind of game are you playing, Doctor?” Adrian demanded, his voice rising sharply as the protective veneer of corporate authority cracked under the sudden pressure. He stood up so fast his chair scraped violently against the linoleum floor. “We didn’t come here for riddles or dramatic pauses. We came for a routine confirmation scan. Name your price—if you need an extra retainer for confidentiality or priority scheduling, just say it. Don’t stand there looking like a funeral director.”
Vanessa stepped forward, her face flushing with indignant rage, her manicured fingers gripping the back of Chloe’s chair. “Listen to me, Dr. Reynolds. My family contributes six figures annually to this hospital’s endowment fund. My brother is the senior vice president of Castillo Global. You do not speak to him in riddles. Explain yourself right now, or you won’t even be able to practice veterinary medicine in this state by sundown.”
Chloe didn’t speak. She remained frozen on the examination table, her hands clutching the edges of the paper sheet so tightly her knuckles had turned completely white. Her chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow gasps, and the theatrical tears in her eyes suddenly transformed into genuine, unfiltered panic. She stared fixedly at the doctor, her lips parting as if she wanted to scream, but no sound came out.
Dr. Reynolds did not flinch. He did not blink. He remained entirely motionless behind his mahogany consultation desk, folding his hands neatly over a thick, manila-bound medical dossier that bore a red confidentiality stamp.
“Threats, Mr. Castillo, will not alter human biology, nor will they rewrite genetic code,” Dr. Reynolds said, his voice cutting through their outrage like a scalpel. He slid the dossier forward across the desk, tapping it once with his index finger. “You walked in here today fully convinced that you were entering a new era of dynastic glory. You believed you were discarding a burden and embracing an heir. But you made one fatal mistake common to men of your social standing: you assumed that money could buy obedience from nature itself.”
Adrian took a slow, menacing step toward the desk, leaning down until his face was level with the seated physician. “Watch your mouth, Reynolds. Tell me what is on that screen right now, or I will tear this clinic down brick by brick.”
“Very well,” Dr. Reynolds replied, his expression hardening into absolute granite. He tapped a key on his console, and the high-resolution ultrasound image on the wall monitor vanished, replaced instantly by a split-screen genetic sequencing report and a digital timestamp log.
“Look at the monitor, Mr. Castillo. Not at the fetus. Look at the maternal hormone levels and the paternal DNA match markers logged during Miss Vance’s intake assessment this morning.”
Adrian’s eyes darted to the screen, though the complex arrays of alphanumeric data meant nothing to him at first glance. He saw percentages, base pairs, and mitochondrial tracking indices.
“I don’t care about your medical jargon,” Adrian snarled. “Is my child healthy or not?”
“Your child?” Dr. Reynolds let out a dry, humorless laugh that sounded more like a cough. “Mr. Castillo, according to the comprehensive prenatal blood panel cross-referenced with your familial DNA profile on file from your previous executive health screenings here, the probability that you are the biological father of this fetus is precisely zero point zero percent.”
The words hung in the sterile air like a physical blow.
Adrian staggered backward, catching his hip against the edge of the examination table. His breath caught in his throat, his face draining of all color until he looked like a corpse standing upright. “What... what did you say? That’s impossible. You’re lying. Chloe, tell him he’s lying!”
He whipped around to face the examination table, but Chloe had pulled her knees up to her chest, curling into a tight, shivering ball. Her face was as pale as chalk, and tears were streaming freely down her cheeks, washing away her expensive foundation.
“Adrian... please,” she whimpered, her voice cracking pathetically. “It’s... it’s not what it looks like. Let me explain—”
“Explain what?!” Adrian roared, the veins in his neck bulging as blind, unadulterated fury exploded within him. He lunged forward, grabbing the metal rail of the bed. “Are you telling me you cheated on me? While I was bleeding myself dry to finance your apartment, while I was risking my entire marriage, while I was enduring my mother’s constant nagging... you were sleeping with someone else?!”
Vanessa stared at Chloe in horror, her jaw dropping open as the sheer magnitude of the betrayal crashed down upon her. “You manipulative little parasite... You used my brother? You expected a Castillo to raise another man’s bastard?!”
“It’s not another man’s bastard!” Chloe shrieked, finally breaking down into hysterical sobbing as she clutched the cashmere shawl around her shoulders. “I didn’t sleep with anyone else, Adrian! I swear to God, I didn’t!”
Dr. Reynolds leaned back in his chair, watching the absolute disintegration of their carefully constructed fantasy with cold, clinical detachment. He picked up a pen, twirling it slowly between his fingers.
“Miss Vance is telling the truth, Mr. Castillo,” the doctor said quietly, dropping the final, devastating bomb into the center of the room. “She did not sleep with another man. Because according to these genetic markers, the biological father of this child is not a stranger at all. It is a man who shares fifty percent of your DNA lineage—a man whose genetic profile is already registered in our regional donor and family health database.”
The room went completely, terrifyingly dead.
Adrian froze mid-movement, his hand still gripping the metal rail. His brain seemed to stall, struggling to process the impossible geometry of the doctor’s words. Fifty percent DNA lineage. A family member.

He slowly turned his head to look at his sister.
Vanessa’s face went instantly white as paper, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror as the horrifying implication finally struck her like a lightning bolt.
