Chapter 9 - The Terminal Cascade-9

Officer Briggs had reacted a fraction of a millisecond after the flash, his veteran reflexes kicking in as he hurled his heavy frame backward onto a dry wooden packing crate sitting near the pillar, dragging Elena down with him onto the safe, insulated timber surface just as the electrical wave tore through the space.
The high-voltage surge hit the concrete pylon, short-circuiting the main transit breakers of the upper platforms with a deep, mechanical thud that plunged the entire subterranean bay into a sudden, pitch-black silence, broken only by the sound of the pouring rain filtering down from the ventilation shafts and the crackle of the fire inside the office.
The foreman's glass windows had completely shattered inward under the force of the arc flash, showering the room in a million tiny glass projectiles. The high-voltage surge had blasted the electrical panel off the wall, setting the wooden desk and Vanessa’s leather medical kit instantly on fire.
Vanessa was thrown backward against the brick wall by the concussive force of the explosion. Her dark grey utility shirt was smoking, her face blackened with soot and blood, her hands severely blistered by the thermal feedback from the cutters.
She screamed in agony, a raw, guttural sound of pure physical terror as she rolled across the floorboards to extinguish the flames, her altered, swollen face twisted into an expression of absolute, unadulterated defeat.
Elena jumped down from the wooden packing crate, her boots splashing through the now-neutralized drainage water, and sprinted into the shattered foreman's office.
Vanessa was dragging her broken frame toward the rear exit of the room—a narrow steel maintenance door that opened directly to a vertical iron ladder leading up to the Platform Nine tracks. In her raw, bleeding fingers, she was clutching the navy-blue evidence binder against her chest like a shield.
Elena stepped into the doorway, her flashlight beam pinning her against the steel frame, blocking her path with an absolute finality.
"It’s over, Rachel," Elena said, her voice dead and cold against the wind howling through the shaft. "The train is gone. And you're not catching the next one."
Vanessa looked up through the smoke, her blue eyes wide, completely empty of the arrogant supremacy she had worn in the family court. The empire she had built on the bones of two destroyed families, the multi-million-dollar Cyprus funds, the fake identities—all of it had dissolved into the gray soot of a burning underground office.

She dropped her head against the steel frame, a low, ragged sob of pure, unadulterated defeat tearing from her throat as Officer Briggs stepped through the glass shards, his heavy hands securing the steel handcuffs around her blistered wrists.
Elena reached down, her fingers wrapping around the leather handles of the navy binder. The silver rings were slightly warped by the heat of the explosion, but the colored evidence tabs were completely intact, the records of Arthur Callahan’s legacy preserved for the child who was waiting upstairs in the light.
