Chapter 7 - The Grand Central Tunnels-7

The old subterranean trolley tunnels beneath the Chicago loop were a frozen, windowless labyrinth of soot-stained brick, massive cast-iron support pillars, and rusted tracks where old mail cars had sat waiting for processing since the industrial boom of the early 20th century. The air down here was freezing, thick with the smell of coal dust, stagnant drainage water, and the ancient, heavy decay of a forgotten city.
The distant, rhythmic thud of modern passenger trains arriving and departing on the upper platforms filtered down through the thick concrete ceilings like the heartbeat of a sleeping giant.
Elena and Officer Briggs entered the tunnels through a rusted emergency utility hatch located in the courthouse sub-basement. They moved in total silence, their tactical flashlights turned off to prevent their beams from reflecting off the wet brick walls, relying entirely on the dim, yellow security lights spaced fifty feet apart along the central maintenance corridor.
"According to the smart-lock proxy tracker, she’s stationary," Elena whispered, her breath turning into small clouds of white vapor in the freezing air. She held her phone screen down, the blue light painting her face in a hard, calculated expression. "About seventy yards ahead, inside the old foreman’s mail sorting bay. Why would she stop there if she’s trying to catch the Montreal express on Platform Nine?"
"The foreman's bay houses the old pneumatic transit tubes, Ms. Brooks," Officer Briggs explained, his hand resting steady against the grip of his unholstered service weapon as he scanned the dark shadows cast by the cast-iron pillars. "And it’s also where the building's primary industrial backup generator network is located. If she has a staged vehicle or a secondary identity cache hidden inside the old maintenance lockers... that’s where she’d go to execute the final transformation before stepping onto a train."
They advanced cautiously, their boots stepping over rotted wooden railway ties and shattered glass shards. As they approached the arched brick entrance of the mail sorting bay, a soft, warm light became visible, spilling out from a small, glass-walled foreman's office tucked into the corner of the massive room.
Elena peeked around the rusted edge of an old iron pillar.
Inside the office, standing before a cracked vanity mirror hung on the brick wall, was Vanessa.
She had already stripped off the expensive cream wool suit jacket. She stood in a simple dark grey utility utility shirt and jeans, a pair of long industrial shears in her hand. With cold, clinical precision, she was cutting her beautiful, long blonde hair, hacking it off into a jagged, uneven pixie cut that completely altered the geometry of her face.
On the desk beside her lay an open leather medical kit. Inside it were several small glass vials, syringes, and a stack of different passports with various photographs.

Elena watched as Vanessa picked up a syringe, filled it with a clear saline restructuring fluid from one of the vials, and injected it directly into the soft skin beneath her cheekbones.
"She’s erasing herself right in front of us," Elena whispered, a sudden, horrifying realization crashing through her mind. "She’s changing her facial structure in real-time to bypass the biometric security cameras at the airport gates. She’s clone-shifting her identity."
