Chapter 8 - The Blueprint of Betrayal-8

"Drop the shears, Rachel Lawson!" Officer Briggs shouted, stepping out from behind the cast-iron pillar, his tactical flashlight beam pinning Vanessa against the brick wall of the foreman's office like a butterfly on a board. "State Police! Put your hands on your head and step away from the desk!"

Vanessa froze, the sharp metal blades of the shears hovering just inches from her swollen cheekbone. She turned her head slowly, her blue eyes wide, completely clear of any childish panic, burning with a terrifying, unhinged malice beneath her hacked blonde hair.

She didn't drop the shears. She let out a sharp, mocking chuckle that echoed horribly through the old foreman’s intercom system she had switched on to monitor the tunnel corridors.

"You really are an incredibly boring woman, Elena," Vanessa said, her voice amplified by the speaker, her cadence smooth, crisp, and entirely clear of the physical pain of the facial injections. "You think because you found an old criminal file from Ohio that you’ve dismantled my network? David Sterling was a weak, pathetic fool who died because his heart couldn't handle the reality of his own financial failures. And Arthur Callahan was no different. They were men of numbers, men of contracts, easily broken by a woman who understands what power actually looks like behind the curtains."

She reached down beneath the desk, her fingers gripping a thick, black high-voltage industrial insulation cutter that ran straight into the main electrical breaker block of the station’s backup generator array.

"This building is ninety years old, Elena. The structural pillars are reinforced with steel, but the floorboards are concrete, covered in a thin, shimmering film of standing drainage water that connects this office straight to where you're standing."

She smiled, a wide, terrifying expression of pure madness that distorted her swollen features under the harsh glare of the foreman's lamp.

"The primary electrical conduit for the entire Grand Central transit grid passes directly through this room. If I sever this cable with these insulated cutters... forty thousand volts of industrial electricity will ground directly into the water at your feet. You’ll be fried before your little uniform cop can clear his holster."

"Don't move, Rachel!" Briggs roared, his laser sight painting a bright red dot directly on the center of her chest. "If you cut that line, the arc flash will vaporize you at this close range! You won't escape the blast!"

"There’s always an exit, officer," Vanessa whispered, her thumb hovering over the mechanical jaws of the cutters. "Remember what I told Sophie on the porch: your little godmother can't save you from the dark."

With a sudden, violent movement, her hands slammed the handles of the industrial cutters together.

CRACK-BOOM.

A blinding, blue-white explosion of electrical fire erupted from the severed cable. The sound was like a localized thunderclap, so loud it instantly deafened Elena, leaving nothing but a high-pitched digital ringing in her ears. A massive snake of pure electrical current arc-flashed out from the pylon, grounding directly into the wet concrete floor boards.

The standing drainage water instantly turned into a boiling, sparking grid of absolute death. Blue arcs of static electricity danced across the floor, illuminating the entire sorting bay in a terrifying, cosmic light that blinded the vision for a fraction of a second.
