Chapter 10 - The Interrogator’s Mirror-10

Six months later.
The air inside the interrogation room at the Federal Building in downtown Chicago was crisp, smelling faintly of institutional floor wax, cold coffee, and the quiet, heavy authority of absolute justice. The room was a stark, sterile cube of white concrete and brushed steel, dominated by a massive, one-way mirror that took up an entire wall.
Rachel Lawson—now legally processed and stripped of every fake identity token she had stolen over twelve years—sat on the opposite side of the steel table.
She looked completely unrecognizable. Her hair was a short, jagged, uneven crop of dark gray strands; her face was heavily scarred and sunken from the tissue reactions to the saline injections and the concussive thermal burns of the electrical explosion. Both of her hands were wrapped in thick, sterile white dressings—a poetic, terrifying mirror of the exact injuries she had inflicted upon Sophie’s fragile limbs inside the Lincoln Park mansion.
She wore a bright orange inmate jumpsuit, her wrists and ankles secured to the floor anchors by heavy steel chains that clinked dismally against the concrete floorboards with every minor movement.
Elena Brooks stood behind the one-way mirror in the observation room, her arms crossed over her tailored charcoal wool blazer jacket, her gray eyes fixed on the monitor displaying Rachel's vitals. Beside her stood Senior Special Agent Harris of the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division, a sharp woman whose face carried the quiet satisfaction of a five-year investigation finally finalized.
"She hasn't spoken a single word to her defense team since the grand jury signed the indictments last week," Agent Harris said, turning a page on her digital tablet. "She refused medical treatment beyond the basic burn dressings. She just sits there, staring at the concrete door like she’s waiting for a message from Cyprus."
"She’s waiting for the validation token execution," Elena said, her voice completely calm. "She still believes that Marcus Croft can trigger the remote server wipe on the Vanguard Global servers before the fiscal quarter closes tomorrow morning."
"Marcus Croft was taken into custody at his lakefront estate in Michigan three hours ago, Elena," Agent Harris said, a small, proud smile touching her lips as she pulled a certified document block from her folder. "Our cyber crime units intercepted his master administrative tokens before he could touch the keyboard. The Nicosia pipeline has been completely frozen by the federal treasury, and every dollar of Arthur Callahan’s corporate estate has been legally restored to the non-revocable family trust fund."

Elena let out a long, slow breath, a deep, profound sense of relief softening the hard lines around her eyes. The invisible cage of shame, secrecy, and physical terror that Rachel Lawson had built around my goddaughter’s life had finally, permanently shattered, leaving nothing but the open sky ahead.
"I’m going in there, Harris," Elena said, her hand reaching for the security card reader on the door frame. "I want her to look at my face one last time... before they transport her to the federal facility in vault."
